Reading back through the thread it seems early releases of Spire were CPU hogs. With v1.1 they rewrote the audio engine to be 2x to 3x more efficient. There's a few posters saying the sound changed between 0.9 and 1.1. Dasheesh mentions there is a difference when using certain modulations.HcDoom wrote: Sun Jan 17, 2021 4:52 pmThis is how rumor's start!Sindikhate wrote: Sun Jan 17, 2021 2:26 pm I got Spire a few days ago. Have they changed anything in the engine or the effects as I always remember it brighter and more aggressive? And if that is the case in which version the changes happened? I wonder if there are previous versions to download from their website.![]()
No, nothing changed, everything is the same as before. Great synth!![]()

Yes I remember the engine change for more efficiency.
I never heard and I tested for it because I do recall the debate here.
I never heard it or did any tests or saw any tests to suggest that the engine sounded differently.

You're right most of the claims were without evidence. But RS were never exactly forthcoming with what exactly changed under the hood. They pretty much just come here to announce sales and new updates. It's a shame they don't participate in discussions, they're cases where they could have easily chimed in to clear things up.zvenx wrote: Tue Jan 19, 2021 12:22 am Yes I remember the engine change for more efficiency.

I remember me trying to comparte the osc to filter frequency modulation in Spire 0.9 and 1.x on Dasheesh's request. They soudned absolutely identical to me.v1o wrote: Tue Jan 19, 2021 12:02 am Reading back through the thread it seems early releases of Spire were CPU hogs. I had a feeling that something about the sound changed when they went to version 1.5 or 1.5.1, but, I'm not sure if that wasn't a placebo... Frankly, it still has the same sound character than it ever had, and, if something changed then it is very, very minor.

Our main priority is not to change the sound quality.v1o wrote: Tue Jan 19, 2021 9:25 am You're right most of the claims were without evidence. When we discuss what we could add: any modules, useful functions, CPU optimization, there is always an acute and important question about the identity of the sound with already existing presets. Sometimes we have to sacrifice some good ideas that inevitably may lead to such changes and we understand very well what kind of trouble this can create.
So we would like to debunk the myths about sound change: oscillators, filters, envelopes, effects always sounded the same. From beta to the current version, there have been no changes in the sound.
But, for example, we improved the anti-aliasing Pitch Bend and Mod Wheel algorithms - to get rid of the "ladder". This leads to some changes: the preset itself will sound identical, but it may sound a little different in the project if the automation of Pitch Bend or Mod Wheel was used.
We also found that a Velocity error had sneaked into the Arpeggiator in Step + Key mode in the latest update. We will fix this bug in the next version. But again, this can lead to some changes in the sound of the preset to the correct way.
Hope for your understanding.

We also did some optimization of buffers and got a noticeable increase in CPU performance in projects using multiple instances.
This optimization wasn't mentioned in the Change-log.
Here is a free DAW project as a benchmark for comparison:

Wasn’t looking for a new synth, as I’d picked up a few last year, but was always curious about spire, due mainly to some of the preset packs for pad sounds and drones, so I demoed it over christmas. Has a sound to it, that reminded me of using kontakt and fx chains and a cpu hit to match, ended up getting loads of preset packs on sale, with the intention of riding out the demo till later this year, disguising the bursts of white noise with quick bounce in place, fx and rx7.
The noise bursts tho, work around’s, started getting in on my teats and in the way of my flow, got such a beautiful sound to it, sonically, was using things like adaptiverb, irid, absynth fx and a few others to get sounds to float in the background or sound like how you’d hear some music on psychedelic’s, spire gets me most the way there pre fx.
Got some unexpected christmas cash, had my eye on hive, lunaris or haunted spaces, could only get one after a brutal black friday and a december of, ‘the trough is full pigs, feast!’, spire though hit the spot, for the sort of work I’m doing at the mo and now it is mine:)
Just a heads up, I’m not affiliated with these cats or anything, but the presets I liked the most, out of the haul I’d got over christmas are having a 75% sale atm, was 60% when I was plundering over the new year, oh well, ends tomorrow on the 3rd, there big bundle is very cheap atm.

You won't regret. No matter how many synths I try, or also use, I always get back to Spire for some sounds. It just sounds - nice.

It’s made me want to focus on sound for awhile and not get distracted collecting different instruments, synths, samples and the like. My one downside is working at 96khz, I need to plan things out more, soon as I reach for spire, my hand heads towards my zynaptiq folder, my laptop welps and one of its cores gets overloaded, as it knows what I’m about to do, happy so far, but need to refine my approach at higher sample rates.chk071 wrote: Tue Feb 02, 2021 12:22 pmmister-rz wrote: Tue Feb 02, 2021 12:08 pm Got some unexpected christmas cash, had my eye on hive, lunaris or haunted spaces, could only get one after a brutal black friday and a december of, ‘the trough is full pigs, feast!’, spire though hit the spot, for the sort of work I’m doing at the mo and now it is mine:)
