it comes down to this if you like what you hear and your music and production benifits from it then you'll pay the extra money you'll live with the ilok protection.

...unless you just bought the exact same $300 plug-in for $80. Otherwise, I agree. I'll put up with anything for a good app.

I want to know how long it will take for the first person to buy the bloated price RND version.. If you have bought it, dont be afraid and just leave a quick note..

I do understand they are good products, but I have to wonder how quickly or ever ( a fairly open ended use of the word EVER, since SOMEOne will buy them), that these plugs will recover and be accepted at the new price, or will the fact that they doubled in price be in the back of everyones mind who knows, and becasue of this they buy a different plug..?

I could understand a small increase for the d/l version for the distributor's cut...
Big pro audio retail distribution networks need at least a high margin off the list price (that's the reason we usually see considerable discounts on all kind of ware on such sites like Sweetwater).
I get ya Aleksey...MSRP, MAP and the actual purchase price can vary greatly...and it makes more sense in this light.

EA wants 129 bucks for Firum. SO...RND has to cover that and make a bit AND set the price high enough that <INSERT RETAIL/INTERNET STORE HERE> can discount it by 25-30% to make it look like a deal. AND...RND can't really sell it for less that what the dealers are selling it for or they won't have any dealers ...

BUT my point was that 2 weeks ago, Firium was 129 bucks for a d/l version which RND will "upgrade" to the RND iLok version for 20 bucks, yet the RND iLOk d/l version today costs 249 bucks. That's just silly.

Sell the f'er for 149 bucks for the iLok'd d/l and up the price when you box it, update it and actually have some added value. Until then, you're making people pay 120 bucks more and requiring them to use an iLok AND you made the name suck too.

Anyway...if you would make some Mac plugs, I wouldn't even be talking about this ... ;-)
Play what you feel and feel what you play.

Retail network margins are actually around 40% (and up) as far as I know, so things are worse than that. :) So, in the best scenario EAS gets $70 per plug-in. It should be understood by everyone on this on-line scene that plug-in prices are high mainly because of big retailers which are too big to have small prices and small margins. That was one of the reasons I was not ever particularly happy about retail market deals that were offered to me in the past. They were asking for higher prices or for higher margins. Almost a rip-off: you lose your own on-line presence without a guarantee for retail success. Hope EAS won't face such rip-off.

:) You've tapped into the ultimate truth of the digital age:

If you have something worth having, you can either get an immediate tiny slice or you can get a bigger slice with a coke and a smile on your own freakin' schedule. The problem or the glory, depending on one's point of view or situation, is that the means of production are now more democratic than ever before and yet are caught in the tension of a lot of noise (lots of distracting chameleon experiences).

In the meantime, enjoy Ralph Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending". He's dead and won't mind if we don't Paypal him :)

Well that's a contradictory statement if ever I've seen one. What ? Moral people download cracked software and buy the legitimate copy ? Fascinating.
Here's a scenario.

The water reticulation system in your city is being upgraded to a new high pressure system - a new deal between the Mayor and the ACME Corporation is announced. As a consequence new shower receptacles will have to be installed everywhere in your city.

You discover that all the plumbing supplies companies have been bought up by ACME Corporation recently - they are now the sole licenced suppliers of the new high pressure fittings. You get a plumbing contractor to install the new ACME shower rose and then you discover that they ACME Corporation has "re-envisioned" its customer relations. The shower facilities are not just for anyone - they are for the end user only. As part of the EU Licence Agreement you will have to prove that only you or members of your immediate family use the new facilities.

To this end, there is a finger print scanner attached above the faucet and, as part of commisioning the new shower, you must supply thumb prints for all licenced users and documentation to show that they are first degree relatives or spouses. After initialisation of the new HP Shower Mk 1 system anyone expecting a flow of water will have to maintain contact between the fingers of their right hand and the sensor at all times to guarantee flow.

Should you sell your house or rent it out the licence is non-transferrable. A new EULA will have to be signed by the new occupants and the Intialisation fee will be charged again to each of those occupants.

Would you comply with this regime or join the great unwashed?

That's a very common practice...more than what you think.

If I remember well, I saw ppl trying to avoid Autotune iLok (or it was for the waves plugs?) since year 2001 or so... some ppl also posted videos showing computers rebooting/crashing/freezing due to iLoks.

I don't say you should use pirated software, but when it comes to iLok, and you definitely need to avoid it, what's wrong about getting cracked stuff if you DID bought them and have the licences.

In a nutshell...if they (companies) screw you with such devices...WTF! you need your software running right? after all they are expensive.

Maybe is not iLok per se...USB ports can turn against you sometimes if you have several things connected.

Firstly, your scenario has assumed that I have to update. Yet, no-one's forcing anyone to update their Elemental Audio purchase if they don't want to, or any software for that matter.

Secondly, I refuse to accept that anyone can call themselves 'moral' if they download cracked software. Inconvenience is no excuse for breaking the law.

What's right about it ? I'm not going to support pirates.

But ZERO harm is being done if you have already bought the software. A lot of people download the crack of a problem they own because unfortunately the cracked versions of some programs run better than the legit version and conveniently without an ilok/dongle. It simply isn't piracy.

I did not put this up seriously as an analogy - I simply wanted to see how far your compliance with one sided contracts would go. I doubt that you would actually wash yourself with one hand on the wall at all times to comply with an EULA but this level of inconvenience is visited on people on a daily basis and players more powerful than VST plugin developers are twisting the arms of governments to make doing otherwise punishable by imprisonment etc.

The guys who discovered the Sony RootKit thing were frightened to publicise their findings for fear of prosecution. According to a radio program I heard here, their legal advice was that they could do so under the law at that time in the US but the legal opinion is that since the recent changes to the law, they could now not publicise what they found for fear of prosecution. Amazing stuff. A company can introduce viral stuff onto your PC without your knowledge or consent and you cannot even reveal to others that they have done so.
