bit of a shame that the list contains one or two factual errorscupertinofinezt wrote:Well I have to say I am extremely let down and wonder how much money Propellerheads paid those [clowns] people for their reactions to "Record". Have these people ever seen a DAW before?
The fact that Record is nothing more than a glorified version of Garageband without the external plug-in features makes this product one of the lamest releases of the year. Even Steinberg's pathetic Sequel could give Record a run for it's money.
Compared to the current industry leader: Logic 8, "Record" fails miserably in most areas.
logic does not feature elastic audio
logic does not cost under $300
logic does not feature ssl emulations
but essentially I agree
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Elastic Audio - well not yet.....ericj23 wrote:bit of a shame that the list contains one or two factual errorscupertinofinezt wrote:Well I have to say I am extremely let down and wonder how much money Propellerheads paid those [clowns] people for their reactions to "Record". $300 - Express costs 200, and it is essentially the same thing.
SSL Emulation - go to the Logic 8 compressor and select VCA.

No time code support, no video support.
This is the deal-breaker for me...I dont care about the rest...but this keeps it squarely in "amateur/needs adjunct gear to be pro" territory. WTF??!?

But hey, Logic 9 is great news for the 3.36% of the world's computer users who are on Mac. Yes, that is their actual share on the computer market worldwide as of Q1, 2009.daradei wrote:and Logic nowadays is Mac ONLY. that's a dealbreaker for me, not a dongle
As for the dongle, well... actually Logic has a 50 lbs, $2500 hardware dongle called Mac Pro, and a few somewhat lighter and less expensive dongles such as MacBook Pro and iMac. They've already locked you in to their platform, so why would they need USB dongles? Duhh.
After the steep price of admission (the purchase of a Mac), you can get some good deals on Apple's own software, but that's part of their business model. First you pay them an otherworldly profit margin on the hardware, which subsidizes their software development, then they lock you in by selling suspiciously cheap software like iWork and Logic. So the price comparison is useless, really.
Also, what constitutes the title of "industry leader" here? The largest install base? That's Cubase. The industry standard? That's ProTools.

don't get me wrong, I met Logic, read a lot about it, tried it and it's my platonic love...but a very huge investmentblank/diod wrote:But hey, Logic 9 is great news for the 3.36% of the world's computer users who are on Mac. no it isn't - it's a cut down version
no sorry but a VCA compresor is not the same as an emulation

I'm no Mac lover (or hater) but that seems kinda low to me. Wasn't it something like 10%?blank/diod wrote: But hey, Logic 9 is great news for the 3.36% of the world's computer users who are on Mac. Yes, that is their actual share on the computer market worldwide as of Q1, 2009.

there is no-one outside of the first world buying a mac - US market share is about 6%TristezaOrange wrote:I'm no Mac lover (or hater) but that seems kinda low to me. there are lots of computer users in other parts of the world
http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs ... he-us.aspx
gives figures but actually ignores all those home built PC's out there, as this is calculated from whole PC's. And no-one builds macs from parts
so it is less that 3.36% i'm afraid

No. It's 7.46% in the U.S and 3.36% worldwide (up from 6.26% and 3.26% a year earlier as ericj123 pointed out), if you look at actual unit sales. Some like to use web browser stats to determine the market share but this is a flawed method since...TristezaOrange wrote:I'm no Mac lover (or hater) but that seems kinda low to me. A) Hackintoshes (PCs with OS X installed), Psystar and PearC Mac clones will identify themselves as Macs. While they contribute to the OS X marketshare in their own 'special' way, they have nothing to do with Apple's sales.
B) Millions of PCs are in closed office network environments with restricted or non-existant access to the web, while the majority of Macs tend to be owned by consumers who surf a lot, so they're overrepresented in web stats.
Of course the market share is much higher in the audio/music production segment which is one of the Mac's strongholds, but that's another story.
