Is 2C's Aether REALLY worth it? (the answer is: yes, certainly)

the new 'cascade' param is rocking... I'm loving it!
so far my impression is that this would qualify for a major upgrade (2.x) in many other sw companies.
you've greatly expanded the capabilities of an already amazing product!
amazing work guys..
Aether has become my 'go-to' in 1.0.1 anyways.
I've yet to exolore thouroughly all the new stuff . only scratched the surface last night.
but from the looks of it.. you guys have been very hard at work!
THANK YOU !

I know it's a wee bit nerdy to gush over a plugin, but after dropping 1.5 on a few projects and going nuts over the new options and the high-q rendering... all I can say is: wow. wow. wow. This is even better than I thought it'd be (ye of little faith). And it's not just that, the "cosmetic" update is a total winner, as well - the browser and frequency presets are a joy to use. And, oh-kay, the new UI is groovy and clean. What happened to the large versions, btw? I like the large versions (probably one of the three people who prefer it).
This is a 2.5 update at least... thanks so much for your efforts and generosity! Hope you reap lots of new sales, re- and awards for this.

Just a note about the installer in W7-64: on a hunch I moved the install folder from the network share where I usually run my installers from, to the desktop. Launching the installer from that location worked. The installer simply and silently quits when launched from the network share.
Some installers will tell me they can't be installed from a network share - this one doesn't and I guess it should. FYI.

Fourth person -- the larger skin was definitely a welcome sight on my 24" iMac. I miss it. Andrew, could we please, please, please at least have a larger version of the new GUI?
(Some of the text is especially hard to read. And my sight is excellent!)

I love the new version.
Great sound (also some very useful presets, and I'm not usually a preset person)
The new 2D gui is also very nice. (works fine on both my 24" and 12")
Simply an awesome update.

I bought aether yesterday. I was impressed by the 1.01 version; inparticularly the natural sound it seems to have on any source. It's a great addition to my arsenal.
After hearing all this good response, I'm dying to get my hands on the 1.5 version. The anticipation is killing me

A bug report (sort of):
Having Aether 1.5 in a Cubase 5.1.1 project makes the audio render of that project r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w.
I was just rendering a fairly simple 5 minute clip with only a few VSTs. Without Aether 1.5 included the audio export of that project took less than a minute. With just 1 instance of Aether the render takes more than 15 minutes.
This is with 2x oversampling, ultra smooth modulation and 'perfection' interpolation. Taking all these down to real time settings does indeed reduce the rendering time to around 2 min (still 2x longer than without Aether and longer than with Aether 1).
I suppose this is not a bug per se, as it is dependent on the high-quality offline mode. However, 15 min rendering of a 5 minute clip with just 1 instance of Aether is ridiculous, Aether increasing the rendering time by around 15x. Putting 2 more instances of Aether in the same 5 minute clip takes more than 1h of rendering, according to Cubase's estimate (needless to say, I didn't bother to actually sit through that). This does not seem normal, no matter how ultra smooth the modulation is.
I was exporting to 48kHZ 16bit wav, but this doesn't seem to make a difference.

I didn't use a stopwatch last night, but my rendering times were nowhere near that with the settings you describe - even using three or four instances of Aether. What are your system specs? I suspect that it profits heavily from multi-cores and generous RAM.visa tapani wrote:A bug report (sort of):

Thanks for addressing the OSX AU version problems so quickly Andrew.
This thread began with the question, "is 2C's aether REALLY worth it?"
For those of you that are considering the purchase, here are my two cents worth:
I like many other professionals in this forum, make decisions as engineer, producer and musician every day. Often it involves the purchase of products to serve our clients or our compositions. I personally will never make a quality compromise in the gear that I choose in this service. We currently use a pair of the Lexicon hardware reverbs valued at several thousand dollars each. I was not aware of 2cAudio and Aether until I read a review in Sound On Sound magazine, which the studio subscribes to. I checked out the demo, was in full agreement with the S.O.S. review and bought it. (Version 1.01) I consequently became aware of the KVR forum, and followed this thread. The Version 1.5 upgrade has taken Aether to a new level. This is the best algorithmic reverb plugin that I have heard to date. It sits in perfect company with the expensive hardware alternatives, and competes directly with the new $1500 lexicon plugin. I love and trust the Lexicon product, and now have the same consideration for 2cAudio's Aether.
Is it worth $250? Well, in opinion, they certainly could have charged much more for it, given it's quality level in professional use. They chose to make it available at this price to make it affordable to a wider group of users. This was a great decision. Don't let the price fool you into thinking that paying more gets you more in this case.
It's a ridiculously good bargain from a company that has integrity, actually listens to it's user base and responds to their needs in a timely fashion. It is rare to have the likes of Andrew Souter, interacting at this level with the user.
Congratulations in your achievement Andrew and 2cAudio, and please keep up the great work with all the success you deserve.
