I have the same issue. Paid for the Pro version.

Makes it basically unusable for me, which sucks, because I think it's a really great synth.

I don't expect a synth to be updated every 20 minutes, but it's almost been 2 years since the 1.5 release. "Abandonware" is a buzzword that people use WAY to frequently...but if we don't get some sign from Matt that he's alive and working on something, then yeah, Vital is starting to look a lot like abandonware. Hell, just push out a minor update with a few bugfixes and call it a day. Give us a sign, Matt. Give us a siiiiiiign. :?

Is there really no single sign from Matt since the latest update to version 1.5?

I've resigned myself to the fact that Vital is abandonware. It's usually not a big thing in the world of music software: the market's volatile and one-man-shops will unfortunately close down more often than not which means that users like me need to have some tolerance for stopped development. But I think it's audacious to continue peddling the subscription tier for the synth openly on the website when there has been no movement for years. I would almost go as far as saying all paid tiers should be paused unless there is SOME kind of activity presented for this more publically than a Discord channel.

There might have been and I just didn't notice. But I haven't seen him make an appearance anywhere online or on the Vital Discord for the last few years.

Ah, okay, ran a search on Discord. He has indeed poked his head in to let us know what's up. I guess he's also got something new coming.

I wouldn't take much stock in this if time is a consideration. Every communique Matt has posted in the last two years or so has been like this one: roughly one sentence long, detail-less and months apart. I truly hope that he is indeed continuing Vital's development....as Vital still remains to be a brilliant piece of work.

Hi, first post :)

I have been strongly considering the pro version - I can't read 243 pages right now, however I have read the last 20 ish and from what I gather, there is legitimate concern that this lovely synth is abandoned?

I noticed with the Pro version it says prioritised support but I couldn't even see a contact form or email on the website.

The free version does work absolutely fine on my Windows laptop, it feels really solid actually, and that includes no GUI issues in Pro Tools or Cubase 13, however I have an M3 Mac on the way and have no idea how it might behave there. I'm a Pro Tools user primarily, therefore I use Vital in Patchwork at present (works great on Windows 11 at least). I am using a laptop so it's a combo Nvidia RTX 4000 and Intel UHD GPU, however I do have it set so Pro Tools uses the discrete GPU.

Perhaps I should just buy a preset bank here or there rather than Pro, as from what I understand, the difference is strictly the extra 325 presets?

Not sure what to do. Honestly, 2 years (not quite, but close) is not *that* long in the plugin world between updates, but some of the other stuff I have read (e.g. from Teksonik) is definitely worrying me a little about spending my money. $80 is quite a bit right at this moment, but I sincerely love the sound and editing feel of this thing, however I just wish we could find out if it will be updated again or not. There are a lot of other users with issues and that could happen to me for all I know at some point also. I'd just feel more comfortable hearing anything from the developer with some sort of news update - anything.

I'll say it again:

Vital was the best purchase I ever made as far as synths go, and I've paid a small fortune on synths both hardware and software over many years: Vital has replaced pretty much every synth I own, and I own a *lot* of stuff.

The workflow in Vital is unparalleled: there's no other synth out there that jives as complimentary to how I think than Vital. When creating and manipulating sounds, I've yet to be stumped with a sound I wanted to create or mimic.

As far as updating/abandonware etc, entirely a non-personal issue if it works for you.
Have you tried Vital?

I've heard the developer does post somewhere every once and a while, but it's generally just a short "Yep, still working on it" kinda post.

If $80 is a lot for you right now, then I think probably the best move is to use the free version for the time being. You can always buy the pro version later when you're more comfortable, whether that means when you have more money to spend, or when you feel like you've gotten $80 of value out of it, or after an update comes out.

This is really good advice for those who may have an interest in Vital as a hobbyist. I would also encourage those who can afford it to support Matt’s work. That’s probably the best way for us to eventually see progress or a completely new plug-in altogether.

Vital is incredibly flexible and capable for a synth that you can get for very little or for free. I’m thankful for it because I have had a lot of fun twisting and bending sounds and Matt showed what’s possible with a little imagination. It’s for that reason that I want to continue to support any of his new developments. :tu:

Wait till you get your M3 machine, download the free version of Vital and put it to work. Judge the performance by yourself and decide if you want to buy the Pro version. Apple is known for giving developers headaches with it's constant updates and Matt is on the quieter side of things with Vital's maintanence/development so I'd say it's a 50/50 situation with what future might bring and we can't be certain which one it is. But sceptics will of course tell you that it's dead and they may be right :)

Thanks for all the good advice.
I agree with @Psuper. I *love* using Vital. It's not just the sound, which to me is very good, but the feel of clicking around the GUI. Everything feels right when it comes to programming it.
I do of course have the freebie installed atm. What I think I will do is install the free version on the Mac, and if there are no initial issues, I'll pay $25 for the plus version which seems very reasonable for 250 sounds and a lot of extra wavetables. I have seen dedicated presets banks for various synths costing upwards of $30 alone, even as high as 50 Euro in some cases - and only for 64 or 128 presets! So $25 seems really good value.
And then after say a month, if it's been rock solid, I'll sub to it for $5 a month so I don't have to pay it outright, and after 11 months I can use that as credit for the upgrade to Pro. Or, I can use that money for some different presets.

Since we are in a Vital topic, I hope it's ok to ask the following here:

Basically, I DO find the payment structure a little confusing. When I click onto vital presets on the website it shows either a pro, plus or sub sign on them, or nothing at all, which I presume means that everyone has to pay for that pack separately.
Just to confirm, do the presets with the little "sub" sign on this page:
https://account.vital.audio/store/
come WITH the subscription?

Finally, I would like to say, I understand the sentiment from the replies entirely. The thing is though that Apple can break compatibility a lot faster than Windows. Therefore, even if it works now, I'll feel more comfortable continuing to invest in it long term, whether with 3rd party banks or official ones, if I at least know it's still under active development. I believe that's a completely reasonable attitude. This is why the sub also suits me cause I can pay the $55 over 11 months and only $25 up front, and after the 11 months if there is STILL no new release, well, I'll buy some banks and call it a day and just use it till it doesn't work anymore. Hope that makes sense.

I am moving entirely to a Mac, of which I am generally much more experienced with. But, because I have become quite accustomed to certain things about Windows now, as in, I feel comfortable in it, finally, well, I might buy one of those mini fanless PCs to use exclusive Windows plugins and some old 32 bit synths with JBridge. Imagine like a little hardware synth but a tiny PC. If Vital ends up giving me issues on Mac, there's always Windows to fall back to using this scenario, so, ultimately I think it will be OK.

Despite everything I have said, it would simply be SAD for the community if the synth is abandonware, and I am sticking to my guns on that one. It's a glorious product and deserves love. I just hope the developer is well and able to continue:)
