This is actually quite amazing: a guy goes from being an industry guru; a man famous for being THE most methodical, perfectionist, and award winning engineer/producer in action (circa 1980) to this tawdry fiasco.

iLok dongles are requested by retailers - not by users. Retailers also require RTAS support.

That's interesting. Why? You'd think they don't give a flying fart, since their bottom line is sales. Unless... ilok and RTAS sell more.

RTAS is definitely requested by retails. But I *think* iLok is requested as well. Because anyone who enters retail with plug-ins has iLok or Syncrosoft. I.e. no serial numbers while iLok is cracked as successfully as serial numbers protections get cracked. So, this leads me to think iLok is tightly connected with retailers - it won't be a surprise if iLok's owners are 'bugging' (or 'just' asking) retailers to support them.

RTAS and iLok may not necessarily sell more - that can be a part of marketing 'we're in the pro league' hype.

Of course shops are going to "request" iLok. It's a physical product, shops sell physical products!

Well, besides Microsoft and Pace ( and a lot of that is Pace C/R and not iLok) this is valid for most of the challence/response copy protection routines. NI stuff suffers from the same, and therefore is worse than iLok IMO.
I think only Celemony and Ableton C/R systems do not suffer from that.
Concerning iLok, besides xskey I do not think that there is a dongle that functions better or worse (like Synchrosoft) - so also have to avoid Steinberg, Scarbee, VSL, Arturia, Korg, etc. Not to forget the PCI dongles of UAD and TCelectronic.

Of course it is your decision what you buy and what you prefer to avoid.

Syncrosoft I don't mind. Really, I've had no problems (but I do worry about the whole going-out-of-business problem). I'm thinking I'll just stick with the Cubase dongle and I'll only entertain the idea of dongled products that use the Syncrosoft protection. Luckily, that includes Amplitube and CSR - both on my hit list.

That iLok shit, should be illegal. No way I can support something like that.

I got news for ya...ours are plenty enforceable.

The only validity that could be attributed to that statement is in cases where a country does not subscribe to international copyright laws. I suppose another point he could be trying to make is the fact that, obviously, some EULA's do have ridiculous restrictions within them, and, unless someone from the company is right there, standing over your shoulder, they probably aren't going to find out how you're violating the EULA. However, if, for whatever reason, they were to find out, you'd be held by the laws of their country in most cases, and not your own.

Yeah, right. So, you're suggesting getting into a contract, but disregarding the element of the contract that displeases you. I hope you're treated with the same ethics the next time you sign one, just so you get a taste of your own dishonesty and lack of ethics; hell, I hope you sign a recording contract, sell millions of albums, and then the label just disregard the "paying" aspect of the contract altogether because it displease them.

I have another suggestion: read the contract, if you disagree with the terms, don't get into it and let the other party know the why of it.
