I'm loving Compassion , I'm sorry to be so persistant ; But I'm the sort who'll read manuals for stuff I don't even own or can't afford looking for knowledge.
My spouse does software development and has told me that code always takes precedence over manuals . I understand that your product isn't mostly targeted at beginners, but you will probably help yourself out in the long run if you explain things , especially some of the more unique aspects of this processor , maybe twice from different angles and such .
Maybe try to use two descriptors if possible ( Jargon and nomenclature being as ad-hoc as they are !!) I'm always amazed at how many different approaches are taken at trying to explain this stuff ...Harder to teach when there are so many terms describing the same phenom......
But I have to say again , wonderfull dynamics processor !!!
Financial solvency and KVR Mix as well as oil and water.

Hey Dave,
I got the gate working with the gate/gate2 mods.
Though I'm having trouble with the hysteresis control.
According to the example from the manual the hysteresis control goes in both directions... what's the background for this behaviour?
I only know implementations where it goes in one direction and for the other the threshold remains untouched.
I'm asking because it seems quite tricky to find the sweet spot of the gate with this implementation. Everytime I think I've found it, I get a huge hole somewhere later
Cheers,
Doc

Dave, I've spent a lot of time with Compassion and it's probably the knob ranges, but I just can never seem to get the sound I want as quickly as I like. I feel like Compassion just goes from not enough compression, to too much, or too fast an attack to too slow, and the same holds true for the release and threshold controls. I've gotten it to sound great, but I just find myself spending too much time fiddling around with it for it to work for me.
What sucks is that I really wanted to like this, especially considering how much I like EQuality and how much of a compression nut I am. Anyway, here's to hoping for some sanity in the knob ranges
or a Lite version of Compassion that's a lot easier to setup. Look at the Logic Platinum Comp, which I just used for the first time a few weeks back while mixing a project at friend's place. It has the different circuits, simple controls, and sounds great. I was able to get the sound I wanted out of that thing in 30 seconds, and that was with no prior experience with it.
And one last thing: is the EQ in the Opto mod supposed to filter out all the bottom end or is that something that just slipped through in the QA process? It drives me nuts every time I audition it and suddenly the bass disappears.
Anyway, I hope you don't mind the constructive criticism. I'll definitely be watching Compassion's development. In the meantime, EQuality has already become my go-to EQ.

Check the eq settings..Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: And one last thing: is the EQ in the Opto mod supposed to filter out all the bottom end or is that something that just slipped through in the QA process? It drives me nuts every time I audition it and suddenly the bass disappears.
I feel I'm geeting used to the ranges, but only with the shift key
This is the first ITB compressor that is allowed to stay
on the main bus from the beginning, love it

I know about the EQ, and the hipass filter is definitely on high there. I've been manually adjusting it. I'm just wondering if it's intentional or not.guppi wrote:Check the eq settings..
Thanks anyway though.

But this leads directly to the question if we are going to get a manual with more explanations of the most critical parameters and parameter combinations to emulate some classic compressor designs?
I don't know my use of presets in the future but I think it would be a fabulous reading about compressor designs in general
btw: thanks bmanic, your master presets are fun

the easiest way to find out "...critical parameters and parameter combinations to emulate some classic compressor designs" is to load a Mod and open the Mod section/panel and look at the settings. compare a few of them. it's a good place to start, anyway...

Someone mentioned SSL Bus Compressor comparision with Compassion. Would really like to hear how and if you got them to sound similar!
I'm a fan of the SSL Bus Compressor but i don't have it in my current DAW. Tried Bombadier but it doesn't even come close. The Glue i have and it sounds similar, but not quite there yet. Especially not without oversampling.
So in my quest for the next best bus compressor, how does Compassion live up to the task??

Have loads on at the moment but have had some time to get to grips with at least some of compassions vast features!
So far I'm loving it. It can really grab the audio and be punishing or subtle. I love the clip limiter but have noticed that when you go to 1% on the clip/limit slider the output drops by a few dB, perhaps a bug?
Anyone have any ideas what advanced parameters should be tweaked to get an api2500 style compressor (specifically 1.5 ratio, soft knee for mastering).
Would be nice to know what comps the character mods are in reference to. Anyone?
Will def be buying before the end of the month, I use Equality all the time so am turning into a bit of a DMG fanboy

wow. this thing is insane. definitely a rtfm'r though. there go my next couple of weekends.
fwiw, i LIKE the overall gui and especially the waveform-pulldown-to-set-threshold thing. it makes sense to me in an intuitive way. the meters at the top/bottom take a little getting used to, but i'm sure i can cope. the colors in those are perhaps a bit loud though. I wouldn't be disagreeable about a more mellow color scheme for those.

you may not like COMPassion because it's better than the SSL...zeep wrote:So in my quest for the next best bus compressor, how does Compassion live up to the task??

A bit late to the party but it was worth the wait! [non sequitur]I just bought COMPassion and EQuality![/non sequitur]
Sonalksis SV-315mk2 has been my favorite/go-to compressor for a while now... so I was afraid that COMPasssion couldn't possibly surpass my expectations. Boy was I wrong. I have only spent an hour using it on drums but I can tell already that this is the beginning of a love affair.
Thanks Dave. Great work!

Does anybody know if there will be mods released in the near future?
After all, it's one of the unique possibilities that COMPassions offers (emulating different types of compressors).
