I guess it's synth month because U-HE is finishing the new Hive synth

I expect some people are hearing Serum as frosty/cold/digital/whatever due to a few things. One is that it seems to maintain a pretty high level of sonic purity when transposing waveforms and scanning through wavetables without noticeably bandlimiting the high end, and a really present and extended top end can sometimes be perceived as "cold." I gather most wavetable synths don't do this because of the CPU cost (which, with Serum, seems to be pretty heavy). And of course, a lot of wavetables on other synths have regions that sound buzzy/harsh. Go through the wavetables on a Microwave or Blofeld and you'll find quite a few buzzy/brittle/ugly areas too. You have to be mindful of which regions of which wavetables you're traversing and filter accordingly if you want to keep things on the smoother side.

Back OT (since this isn't the Serum thread, LOL), I quite like the newest Hive GUI. It does vaguely put me in mind of Toxic Biohazard and maybe just a tiny bit the older and more "evil" looking Virus Control GUI, which are two GUI's that I really liked. I like the nod to Zebra with the "circle" parameter controls too...in the midst of a graphic design that's very different from previous u-he synths, it gives the design a little bit of a link to u-he's past as well to tie it in.

Here's a quick sequence noodling with just one osc/sub/filter and some filter/resonance modulation tweaking (12dB lowpass, to unveil character and show how it doesn't "fall apart").

(starts very quiet, becomes louder towards the middle)

Yes it does, agreed, that's why I like it a lot.

:tu:

The sonic character reminds me of Bazille. Looking forward to Hive.

may I ask, what's wrong with the clip I posted?

Any chance of a screenshot of the arp/seq screen?

Are we any closer to a final decision on the price yet? Last i heard was $149, subject to change.

Yes, all blue LCD screens have tiny hex backgrounds. Cute but it reduces visibility of the text. Perhaps the hex backgrounds could be dropped in one of the skins?

Is it just me, or, does that look like some sort of alien penis?

hehe, the things people reveal about themselves; Rorschach tests...

Nothing wrong with alien cock though, as long as all parties are willing I'd say.

I personally see an insect aeroplane. Quite like those type of designs. I like Hive's as well, although it needs some polishing. I am aware of buttons and knobs still being added/removed hence the unfinished interface.

Well, that's something i can't un-see.

Sound demo sounds good, but how about a supersaw sound demo for a synth which was supposedly developed as one? :P I know that some people will wrinkle their nose about it, but IMO, it's always very interesting what the unison sounds like. Preferrable also with a "pluck" setting of filters and envelope.

I dunno, is that drawing to scale?

With balls so big he'd never get off the ground, ok, I suppose those could be eyes.

I find them tiresome, it took me forever to explore Absynth just because I couldn't get over the awful interface.

Hive's isn't too bad (as bad), here's some advice, it needs a white skin (option, obviously). No other significant changes, just a white background, black knobs. Something like an Oberheim SEM, with perhaps a paper white scope display.

Exactly! It's like those damned illusions, you can't go back to viewing it like you did before.
