Well I guess I'm just a little shocked that this thread didn't turn into complete shit until page 27.

Real as in a dedicated treated room with multiple monitors, a console, a rack of outboard etc. As opposed to a home or bedroom studio. Which doesn't necessarily has to be inferiour, but usually is.

True expertise, true understanding of audio and the effect of audio on the auditory system, does not mean you will always be able to tell if audio has been generated or modified by analog or digital means. On the contrary having true expertise means you understand that you won't always be able to.

Exactly. I hadn't heard of this "Laidback Luke" guy before so I looked him up on youtube. His stuff, it just sounds... you know... "in the box." Bad. The drum beat on "Be" sounds like a bad loop you'd find on a free loop site or something. The production quality seems below what I would expect from a "PRO!" release. His mixes sound like... like... something I would mix.

Well if you have a link to some Laidback Luke tracks in HAGH QUALITAY I'd be glad to give each and every one a listen. I still don't see why it is impossible to judge the production quality of a track on youtube- it doesn't destroy the audio THAT much. Plus, if something sounds good even on youtube, it probably sounds awesome when listened to properly. "Pjanoo" sounds good even on youtube. LL's tracks sound like the 10,000 other AWESOME HOUSE TECHNO DANCE CLUB FRUITY LOOPS MIX! videos on youtube.

And maybe you missed the last sentence on my post, establishing his skills are at least better than mine.

Oh, but it does!

I don't get what the deal is. People don't have "hifi" systems anymore. The fact is people listen to poorly encoded mp3s, they listen on youtube, they listen on crappy earbuds. It's still possible to somewhat judge a track on all of these.

The point wasn't whether they sounded exactly the same or not, but that it was easy to pick out which was ananlogue and which was digital, to me this means there is still a gap in quality between analogue and digital. The synth squad demo was somewhat static sounding... it did not have the modulations to make it more lively (no PWM added for example)... that has a significant bearing on the matter.

If I know 2 analog synths well, I will be able to pick out which is which from isolated samples. Does that say anything about quality between them? No...

So my point stands. The liveliness or musicality (quality) of the synth squad demo is important in comparing them.

You are essentially saying the ability of the sound designer has no bearing on the test. In this case Andy has plenty of ability but like it said it was a quick test then all sorts of people start taking it as some definitive result.
