Got it - the sfz files don't actually contain the samples, they are referenced from somewhere else but because of the long path it's not loading them either. If I put the entire Architecture folder on my desktop they load fine, but I am not going to resave every single Piscis patch to point to a new location just to fix this, Cakewalk should not have this stupid long paths limitation - it's Windows that has this problem, not Macs usually. I can't risk installing it at a higher level folder either because of the risk that it will delete everything next to it. I put it in a folder of its own for a reason.aMUSEd wrote:OK I tried moving the Gaussian Spectrums folder up several levels - what I find is that this enables the files to load (manually as it breaks the paths in the preset) but they still don't make a sound, whereas the exact same sfz files in the old Rapture folder do. This is maddening as I even copied some of the old sfzs into the Rapture Pro Gaussian Spectrums folder so I know these are the exact same sfz files but they do not make a sound if loaded from inside the Rapture Pro folder.jdnz wrote:21 characters more (161 vs 140) - have a look at the filenames in the 'gaussian spectrums' folder, are the filenames themselves also rather long?aMUSEd wrote: Good point - so it's
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Rapture Content/Multisamples/Galbanum Architecture/SFZ MultiSamples/Spectrum Instruments/Gaussian Spectrums/filename
vs
/Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive/Samples/Cakewalk/Rapture Pro/Multisamples/Galbanum Architecture/SFZ MultiSamples/Spectrum Instruments/Gaussian Spectrums/filename
does look a bit longer - however that doesn't explain why all the other files in the Galbanum Architecture folder (some also in nested subfolders) do load, just not the ones in the Gaussian Spectrums folder.
All of this made much harder by the fact that RP won't remember where I last browsed to!
Cakewalk Rapture Pro Announced :)

Actually it's not really such a problem on Windows either, since quite some time now (yet, it depends on Windows API function used)... A full path on NTFS can contain up to 32768 characters...aMUSEd wrote:Cakewalk should not have this stupid long paths limitation - it's Windows that has this problem, not Macs usually.

All I know is when I tried to copy a bunch of backup folders onto my Skydrive it kept giving me long paths grief, ended up scrapping it.EvilDragon wrote:Actually it's not really such a problem on Windows either, since quite some time now (yet, it depends on Windows API function used)... That's a Skydrive/Onedrive issue, not a Windows issue per se.

Actually, the whole thing is a mess.
The most fundamental of procedures when downloading new software is the installation.
After many attempts at downloading RP I eventually managed to install it.
However......
I'm on a iMac 3.4 running Logic and ProTools.
Many of the patches especially on Rapture Pro do not sound.
The GU is very unstable.
TWO clicks on the mouse to select a sound !?
Why deliver a product that is nowhere near complete and buggy. Poor, poor show Cakewalk.
My instinct is it was rushed out before everyone spent their money on Omnisphere 2.

You could try and use linkd command to make a directory link or junction to any drive somehwere. So you can use a shorter path to reach anywhere - it's all transparent.aMUSEd wrote:If I put the entire Architecture folder on my desktop they load fine, but I am not going to resave every single Piscis patch to point to a new location just to fix this, Cakewalk should not have this stupid long paths limitation - it's Windows that has this problem, not Macs usually. i don't have the new Rapture Pro, but i am a fan of the original. and i have both the Galbanum products. the installation of those expansion packs was wack from the get-go, so i can see how they would be problematic now (because they never got fixed by Galbanum)
my newest sounds:

Probably back in Rapture's early days the default pathlength was much shorter, and the assumption never got revisited. A perfect example of why every team needs an evil Q/A person who enjoys making things fail.EvilDragon wrote:Actually it's not really such a problem on Windows either, since quite some time now (yet, it depends on Windows API function used)... I've read about 10 pages in this topic and I've seen something called "Command Center" multiple times. Does this mean that Cakewalk have switched to a Challenge/Response copy protection system?
If so, I won't be upgrading.

No it doesn't seem to be CR, closer to the NI service centre but actually you have to do less, you don't even need to enter your serial into it, as long as you have registered your product on the Cakewalk website (which also happens automatically if you buy from their shop) you just log into your user account via the Command centre and authorisation just sort of happens automatically (when it works, the problem is it's buggy, although it worked for me eventually). Once they get over the bugs it could be quite nice and seamless actually.

But NI's service centre IS C/R. A well implemented C/R system might not seem obtrusive, but the software is still locked to your computer hardware.aMUSEd wrote:No it doesn't seem to be CR, closer to the NI service centre but actually you have to do less, you don't even need to enter your serial into it, as long as you have registered your product on the Cakewalk website (which also happens automatically if you buy from their shop) you just log into your user account via the Command centre and authorisation just sort of happens automatically (when it works, the problem is it's buggy, although it worked for me eventually). Is it? I thought it was just a link between your user account and computer? (so just an authorisation verifier really)

If you install it again, on the same or on a different computer, do you need to ask permission again to use the plugin? (aka make contact to some online server)aMUSEd wrote:Is it? I thought it was just a link between your user account and computer? (so just an authorisation verifier really)
If so, that's the same principle as challenge/response, with the difference that an existing installation keeps working when hardware is changed.
