fluffy_little_something wrote: Fri Nov 30, 2018 9:09 pm When you say: "Again, FLS hates harsh sounds. He has no use for them. Does that mean that harsh sounds are bad or not as pleasing as mellow sounds?" that implies in my view that I like mellow sounds.

Where the basic senses are concerned, I do think the majority decides what is good and what is not. Not knowingly, of course, but still, the reasons might be physiological and neurological.
Not just with sound, but also with taste. Most humans don't like stuff that taste bitter, but love stuff that tastes sweet.
Same thing with tactile, some things are more pleasant to touch than others.
Colors and shapes as well. There are paintings that most people find beautiful while there are others that most people find ugly.
:sigh:

Still all just opinion.

From the dictionary

Opinion:
a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
"I'm writing to voice my opinion on an issue of great importance"
synonyms: belief, judgment, thought(s), (way of) thinking, mind, (point of) view, viewpoint, outlook, attitude, stance, position, perspective, persuasion, standpoint; More
the beliefs or views of a large number or majority of people about a particular thing.
"the changing climate of opinion"
an estimation of the quality or worth of someone or something.
"I had a higher opinion of myself than I deserved"
Fact:
a thing that is indisputably the case.
"the most commonly known fact about hedgehogs is that they have fleas"
synonyms: reality, actuality, certainty; More
used in discussing the significance of something that is the case.
noun: the fact that
"the real problem facing them is the fact that their funds are being cut"
a piece of information used as evidence or as part of a report or news article.
synonyms: detail, piece of information, particular, item, specific, element, point, factor, feature, characteristic, ingredient, circumstance, aspect, facet; information
"every fact was double-checked"
I'm done with this ridiculous conversation.

"because I know that most people don't like a metallic sound character"
In a synth, this generalization (with no actual definition of the term) is supposed to hold true, for synthesizers.
Ok, what if 'supersaws' which appears to be popular at least on this forum, are 'metallic sound character'?
You've already excluded 'bell-type' sounds from this argument, which shows no particular data about what 'most people' like 'in a synthesizer'.
So you're trying to win an argument rather than use anything like sound reasoning.

You don't _know_ that. A personal impression of people's personal impressions is not going anywhere useful.

"It all comes down to what's pleasing to the ear to the majority." - is one of the most basic and best known logical fallacies in the world. Argument to popularity, as though what is popular (which can change in no time) equals what is good. It could be popular because the marketing engine to promote is that strong, purely through that. It could be popular because it panders to the very lowest common denominator.

The Beatles. Well, a lot of young people today have never heard of them. I'm not a fan in the quality a whole lot of people I know are. The weight of popular opinion changes absolutely nothing about my assessment. Which itself has changed over the years.

"Songs are much more complex than the mere sound quality of a synth" a new goalpost appears. What definition of 'complex' are we going for here?
There isn't one. We see the use of "mere", as though it's self evident that 'the sound quality' is a simpler matter. What about a sound, or a song per se is "complex"?
People's tastes may be complex, but a song form, A B A with a simple diatonic tune - or a song I heard yesterday which was less complex than Mary Had a Little Lamb (arguably technically less than), a tune of three descending notes with no rhythmic shape was just repeated over and over moronically - is not in the terms of musical content or form that complex. The sound of a synth - which sound? - is but a vague generalization.
What if we locate a 'sound' and break it down into what it's made of? No, we have nothing of the sort.

Yeah, nothing there is really quite true, is it.

I just totally disagree with the notion of some people here that any sound character is as good as any other.
Supersaws? I do not think most people like to hear a metallic character in a supersaw sound, to the contrary.
Same with reverbs. A lot of people have criticized Sylenth1 for its metallic reverb, and rightly so. There seems to be a consensus among most people on what sounds good and what not so much.

What makes it hard is that it is impossible to distinguish between poorly formed thoughts and deliberate trolling. And of course, the one can easily become the other as people talk themselves into a corner.

And the thing is, I've been doing this dance with him for years. If I say the sky is blue, he'll say it's pink because he knows it'll piss me off.

I can't wait until I put my 2019 New Year's resolution into effect.
