Oh ok - But Cubase 12 Pro says it comes with Halion Sonic SE 3. Does Cubase now come with Halion Sonic 7? Or still the older version?T-CM11 wrote: Thu Mar 16, 2023 3:59 pmHalion Sonic 7 is the new Halion Sonic SE.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Thu Mar 16, 2023 3:54 pm So now that Halion 7 is out, is there also an updated Halion Sonic SE that comes with Cubase? Edit: Oh ok I see now that Halion Sonic 7 is free for anyone to download? So I guess the question is, does Cubase Pro come with the regular Halion 7 Library that can be used by Halion Sonic 7?

No, you can buy the entire library by buying either Halion 7 or Halion Sonic 7 Collection.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Thu Mar 16, 2023 5:00 pm Edit: Oh ok I see now that Halion Sonic 7 is free for anyone to download? Is SE the 'free' one? That was replaced with Sonic 7. There's also a 'Sonic 7 Collection' you can upgrade to if you had the 'paid' version of Halion Sonic.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Thu Mar 16, 2023 3:54 pm So now that Halion 7 is out, is there also an updated Halion Sonic SE that comes with Cubase? Does Halion 7 read Yamaha Montage patches?
What exactly from the Montage translates into H7?

AFAIK, it doesn't. Different architectures.trusampler wrote: Mon Apr 17, 2023 12:24 am Does Halion 7 read Yamaha Montage patches?

The FM engine in HALion can accurately emulate the FM-X engine in the Montage. I manually created in HALion some patches I did in my MODX and they sounded exactly the same, just by copying the same values and settings for the OPs and their envelopes. The FM engine in HALion can also do a lot of stuff that the one in Montage can't.
But in many ways, surprisingly, HALion is way behind the Montage. It lacks most of the very nice effects of the Montage, can't modulate FX parameters (but can automate them, so that's partially solvable), doesn't have audio input and an Envelope Follower... so there's no way a Montage Performance can be converted to a HALion one as there are too many pieces missing.

ok, so i have some fm synths like ops7 and opsix (+ fm8 + dexed) - could be any reason i should get halion for its fm engine?

If you are considering "just" the FM engine, and considering you already have opsix and FM8, not really, IMO.dune_rave wrote: Sun Apr 30, 2023 9:48 am ok, so i have some fm synths like ops7 and opsix (+ fm8 + dexed) - could be any reason i should get halion for its fm engine?
But HALion is WAY MORE than the FM synth. It's granular engine is unsurpassed, and that alone would justify the purchase. Add toi thatr a very powerful sample player engine, and one of the most pwerful (although not really intuitive) wavetable engine.

Not at all. It's nice, but Falcon (to quote the direct competitor), offers more options for granular.fmr wrote: Sun Apr 30, 2023 10:10 am

It has a very, very nice wavetable EDITOR, but the wavetable oscillator is pretty basic actually.fmr wrote: Sun Apr 30, 2023 10:10 am and one of the most pwerful (although not really intuitive) wavetable engine.

I have to agree, having bought Halion 7 as a first time user (tempted by the FM) I think the FM is the only part that is stronger than Falcon. Granular now also very well implemented in Phase Plant.. probably should have just bought the FM Engine, but the cross grade price made it worth going all in (or so I thought, I haven't used it much!)

It wasn't meant to be a "Montage emulator". (Which also means it's not necessarily a Montage replacement).v1o wrote: Sun Apr 30, 2023 8:03 am What's the point of only porting some features of the Montage and then leaving out other quite major features.
Yamaha developed an engine, FM-X (some of it dates from the times of FS1R), and at some moment decided to put it in their flagship hardware synth.
Then they gave the tech to Steinberg, to put it in a softsynth.
Montage and HALion are two very different synth workstations that happen to feature the FM-X engine.
(I have no idea if the improvements that HALion has are Yamaha developments or something Steinberg did ontop of Yamaha tech. But all additions that HALion's FM has were longtime feature requests from Montage/MODX users).
