I actually think it is a great feature of REAPER and sets it apart from most other DAW apps.
REAPER is probably the ultimate example of DAW portability. I would even suggest Justin start using the DAW on a keychain moniker to further illustrate this. If you've watched the recent "rough edit" of the "Mixing in the Box" seminar where Justin gave a live demonstration of REAPER (about 18 minutes and a relatively big download, 156MB QT video) you would be impressed. He walks onto the stage with a USB stick inserts it into a (I believe it was a Digi rig) and in a few moments he is recording/mixing. At the end of the demo he takes out the USB stick and explains to the audience how you can run REAPER off of a USB stick on just about any computer made in the last 10 years (anything from an old Pentium running Win98 to the latest Vista & octo-quads) and be up in running in a matter of seconds. Totally self contained and un-intrusive to the host system as it does not need to install anything or rely on the Windows registry or it's dll's or even worry about copy protection issues, just hot plug and go.

REAPER.....your DAW on a keychain! Don't leave home without it!

Hehehe....I think I'll put that rather catchy phrase into my signature

I think that Justin doesn't see the portability as the most important feature. On the video that showed him recently demoing Reaper at a "show" the last sentence was about Reaper running of his stick. So ... :)

People often ask me, "so what makes REAPER different from PT or logic?".. To which I have to answer something like:

"Well, it's similar, but it does certain things in a better way-- like tracking, editing, mixing, interfacing with other software and hardware, hardware compatibility, multiprocessor usage, and portability".

So yes it's relevant, but it's not _THE_ thing.. there is no _ONE_ thing that makes REAPER special, IMO.. it's a combination of a lot of things..

I have to admit, I'm motivated to keep my eye on reaper. It looks like it does have some interesting features and is improving with lightspeed. I don't think its quite ready to replace Sonar for me.

Well spoken. I think that the areas you spoke about are some of the strong points of Reaper. There are more to me. Now please tell me what's your priority for making a good automation system for VSTis and VSTs (record automation when I move a knob on a GUI) and some deeper midi functions.
I don't like to say that but Cubase is way ahead in these two points. Now if I only could have Reaper with good automation and good midi stuff. Right now I don't have many other wishes concerning my DAW. :)

At a guess, you want an 'arm all' switch for the automation...instead of having to choose the parameters beforehand? That's a pretty common request.

(Not just a USB key, of course, but a USB-anything, more or less - eg I have it on my Korg D888 multitracker)

Yes Bevoss,

I read over at the Reaper forum that this was requested. Any word from Justin about it?

P.S. On top there should be a function "Show all automated envelopes" which is pretty handy in Nuendo.

Would love to see something clean looking, like Nuendo 3 for instance...

Still, this is indeed a great step forward for REAPER.

Yeah sorry.

But it was soooo short as it seems.

Reaper is cool, and it's skinnable. It won't take too much time until there are a few mega skins available. Then this topic will disappear and people will concentrate on the cool features of Reaper.

I tried the demo and it looks like a great environment for working with audio. For serious work with midi it has a long way to go.

Rubberdesk looks very nice !

I'm looking out for two things:

1) Logic 8
2) Official release of Reaper for OSX

if I don't like 1) I'm moving to 2) and selling 1) :D

and I think this is the best and most usable skin (certainly on osx) Image

it looks better in 'real life' :)
