As a Cubase user contemplating a switch I must say what a major pain it is to set up multitimbral intruments in Ableton.
Considering I use Omnisphere, Trilian and Stylus RMX extensively it really is a deal killer. Love everything else though.

As a user of both, I agree 100%!lotus2035 wrote:As a Cubase user contemplating a switch I must say what a major pain it is to set up multitimbral intruments in Ableton.![]()

edit: scratch that. I feel like an idiot, but see the next post for a good solution that I did not know about.

If you use Live's External Instrument device and save it in the browser, setting multitimbral and multi-output instruments is actually really fast and easy. Once done you can simply drag it in next time you need it without having to set it up again.lotus2035 wrote:As a Cubase user contemplating a switch I must say what a major pain it is to set up multitimbral intruments in Ableton.![]()

Coming from Cubase myself, I think that Live is a lot faster than Cubase when using multitimbral/output instruments.
Personal taste of course.

Wow, awesome. I seriously did not know that Ext. Instrument worked like that. I always assumed it was only for external hardware instruments, so I never even looked at it. This is very cool, and I guess just proof that I might need to hit the books a bit.kenporter wrote:If you use Live's External Instrument device and save it in the browser, setting multitimbral and multi-output instruments is actually really fast and easy. You're welcome. External Instruments is really powerful. As a matter of fact I use it when rewiring Reason, so I am able to easily freeze Reason parts into Live.sockofgold wrote:Wow, awesome. @sockofgold: I read your post before you edited
You were saying something about Ableton getting cluttered real fast, yes I was thinking that too now that I've been using the Live 8 demo a few days, I suppose you get used to it though.
I bought a 2nd hand copy of Live 5 in the marketplace, I might jump on the upgrade to 8 (and 9) before the 25% off offer ends. Have to think about it some more.
@kenporter: Thanks for the tip I will look into it. I was thinking that there had to be a way to save an instrument set up.

Clicking "How do I participate in the Live 9 beta program?" currently takes me https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/edu-upgrade/ which is nice.elxsound wrote:Just a heads up... Live 9 Beta is either now public, or it will be soon. I can't get it to show the same info I received the first time, but maybe you will?
I found the signup on the Live Answers page under the "How do I participate in the Live 9 beta program?" link:
https://www.ableton.com/en/help/
I've downloaded the 64bit version, and the Live 9 packs made available so far, but the 32 bit version is a very slow download.

Well in the beta forum it does say they'll be opening it up to more soon, so hopefully that link will change.
When I clicked on it, there was a link to sign up, and then it automatically added the L9 beta to my account.
My guess is that they're trying to not overload their servers. I'm still downloading the 32 bit version of L9 for the 4th time (all the other downloads failed). It's only about 440 MB for the app (the live packs are larger and available separately).

Since going back to Live I've just been using the single output of the plugin, while routing midi from multiple midi tracks. This way (using External Instrument Device) is so much easier.
I was going to ask for an example (which would still be cool if you want to provide one), but I found this video online here:

Hey guys,
OK, so I am getting a lot of messages about this. I prepared an example using Stylus RMX.
Basically, I created an Instrument Rack, then dropped Stylus in there as well as the External Instruments. Now, you can use external instrument to route to a specific MIDI channel and output of Stylus.
Then simply create a MIDI track and route the output of that MIDI track to the Stylus part 1-16 for example.
The best part is that you can simply drag the Instrument Rack into your Live browser to save it for other sessions.
I've created a Live session using Stylus RMX to better show you guys. You can download it here:

Let me know if you have any questions.

this release is a real letdown for me. They still haven't added basic navigation key commands, and I still can't change the playback starting point from within clip view.

I traded my license for Studio One and I'm glad I did.

Thanks for the advice. I just called and got on the list. The rep didn't want to commit to a price, but he said there will be some "appeasement" and they'll get back to me in a few days, so we'll see.Darknesslord wrote:For all Live 8 user (standard).
