I reckon that that it a bug / functionality shortfall. Range settings are ignored too and the virtual keyboard is constant velocity.

More fun:
load a second copy of an instrument into a second part. change the channel to match the first part, so both hear the notes. (maybe pan one a little right, the other to left).

on one, go into the velocity settings. change the curve on one, and then the other.

maybe put compression on one (or hey, totally change the envelope. go nuts :)

room reverb on the left, slapback echo on the right
(or a wet airplane-hanger delay if you wan that Van Halen sound)

you can thicken up the sounds a bunch of ways.

What are good combinations of instruments to pair up? I often see piano+strings in presets. what else sound good in parallel?

I guess that could depend upon your point of view. It seems useful to be able to work with the original mappings without all the Range settings applied within the ST GUI.

While trying out torgo's tutorial settings I loaded ST into Cantabile as a VSTi and used Cantabile's virtual keyboard to try out the "mapped" Range version (since I don't have a midi keyboard on the system I was trying it out on), while still being able to play around with the unmapped version using the ST GUI virtual keyboard. Seems pretty useful while you're trying to set up all of the Range settings.

It would be nice if the virtual keyboard did support velocity though, but a lot of them don't seem to. I've seen some where the vertical position along the key where you click determines the velocity used. In this case though, having the feature in the host program's virtual keyboard would be more useful, since that is where I was trying out the "mapped" version. But the Cantabile keyboard doesn't seem to support it either.

Look for it in the section that says "Here are your product serials". I think it should be called "V.I. Hot Buy Group Buy Bonus".

If it's not there, check with Allen at esoundz.
Ah... Thank you!!

Great techniques, doubleslash! I've done stuff like that with real guitar tracks for years and it DOES bring lots of cool animation in the stereo field as tones combine, chorus and cancel...

Since ST is so easy to edit and layer, this thread is taking its natural course thru EVERYTHING!

In the guitar dept., try an acoustic on one side, an electric on the other and let a master chorus and reverb tie them together. Headphones are great for placing both sides panning where there's a "hole" in the sound field.
Nylon string guitar and strings or a soft synth pad is a classic too...

Use acoustic piano with clean elec. or acoustic guitar the same way, it's especially nice on arpeggio parts... this combo gets even better with one instrument an octave up. Usually, the pianos sound better up top. Nice to add for the 2nd verse!

As I mentioned to NoviceNewbie, putting electronic drums under your acoustic ones is a quick way to more modern sounding, produced drums.

Same thing with elec. bass, a really deep sine wave bass will give subwoofers something to chew on...

Speaking of bass, try putting a piano bass under your main one, it REALLY helps with bass definition on small speakers, and gives you a Rickenbaker tone that stands right up in a mix. it's an old Phil Spector trick... the less said about his other tricks, the better!

Flute and vibes or marimba give your melody an INSTANT cool jazz feel! Or sax and muted trumpet.

For a classical lead line, oboe and bassoon work GREAT together, as do clarinet and oboe, or bassoon and flute. Again, try putting these instruments an octave apart too.

I've done most of these combos with real instruments over the years and it taught me lots about duo melody voicings.

torgo, I think you've JUST ABOUT got a books worth of ST tutorials on KVR! THANK YOU! I'd LOVE a pdf collection of everything, anyone else? Puh-LEEZE?

Lastly, ANOTHER rave about Electronic Drums! I went thru it again last night and there's so much more than I remembered...
Lots of NICE Ludwig snare and GIANT tom maps and nearly every popular drum machine/syn percusion sound EVER is here is some form. PERFECT for layering! (see how I brought that back around?) :hihi:

By the time this thread ends, we probably will have a pretty nice collection of tips and tutorials. Going back through them and rounding them up would be a pretty good idea.

The latest update from Squids has us at 246. That's a slower pace than I had expected to see, but we're still well on target for 300. And if another surprise or two from Squids sparks extra interest, 400 certainly wouldn't be out of the question.

Post

News about second tier being reached at esoundz.com don't say anything about Miroslav Outtakes.

Is it available yet or still 'coming soon'?

These tips and instrument combinations are fantastic! Thank you, one and all. This is really great stuff.

It's still coming. So all you have to do to get it is not use one of the redeem codes yet until it's available.

Btw you guys are doing well and it is looking like the third tier will be hit which will be yet ANOTHER free library choice so... good luck!

Post

I bet that will be the fourth tier.

Post

We'll need some extra help (another kicker from Squids, an esoundz Memorial Day Weekend sale, an extension on the $99 pricing from IK etc) to hit that fourth tier.

But it certainly could happen. The pace tends to pick up as the bounty gets better.

Post

Squids - in your post to launch this thread, you mentioned unreleased SampleMoog, SampleTron and Sonik Synth sounds in addition to Miroslav outtakes.

Care to drop any hints about other potential libraries that might join the list at the 300 level?

Post

In recent days, many people will join us. a lot of persons waiting for what will be the outcome of these GB.

But some additional good news will not hurt:)

One more question for Squids...

In the Squids Tron Collection vol 1, some of the sounds are in separate folders with "Q" in the folder names - "Chamberlins Q" and "Q Trons".

What's the difference between these and the regular Chamberlin or Mellotron patches? (Is the Q for "quirky"?)

Post

Thanks to everyone for your programming tips and tutorials, as a "load the sound and play it" SampleTank user I appreciate it greatly! It will be nice to pull even more out of these great sounds. By the way, for those of you who picked up Miroslav, there is a five page sticky in the Sonic Reality/esoundz forum here full of tips and tricks to use. I've only just started reading through them, but it looks really helpful! The link is here:

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=103808

I've got a quick question for Squids too. A few weeks ago you mentioned this:
Squids wrote: There will also be 2 or maybe even THREE other $99 products we're going to add to this that will qualify for the Group Buy so stay tuned for that info coming up soon (probably by the end of this week!).
Is that still going to happen? Much as I want to jump in again after picking up Miroslav, right now there's nothing jumping out at me as "MUST BUY NOW" like Miro did. SampleMoog and SampleTron really aren't my thing, and with the 16 Xpansion Tanks I got in last year's group buy I built my own SampleTank (toying with getting it anyway to maybe get a cheaper upgrade to ST 3 when it comes out - but probably won't). Hearing torgo and others rave about Sonik Synth has me thinking about it, but I'm kind of riding the fence on that one too. If there's anything else added as an option I might be more likely to jump in. If it won't work out, that's cool...you guys have been more than generous with all of your group buys :hail: and I'm very happy with what I have picked up, but I came across this earlier in the thread while looking for something else, so I thought I'd ask.
