Have to confess, I've never really paid much attention to which hardware synth makes which sound. Could anyone name a few bands/songs that have a stereotypical moog sound? (Got to know the cliches so you can piss around with them.) Cheers. :)

Well, Wendy (then Walter) Carlos's Switched on Bach was the first commercially successful application of his synths.

Pretty much every prog rock band used the Minimoog, many used the modulars as well: Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer (the synth lead in From The Beginning is a classic Minimoog sound), Camel, Happy The Man, etc.

Early Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze were soaked in the Moog sound. That Tangerine Dream bass sequencer pulse is a classic Moog sound.

Stevie Wonder got into it through his work with TONTO (the huge hybrid Moog/ARP/Serge/Blanchet modular owned and built by Tonto's Expanding Head Band) starting with "Music of My Mind" and continuing through "Talking Book", "Innervisions", "Fulfillingness' First Finale" and "Jungle Fever". TONTO appears prominently on Stevie Wonder's multi-platinum album, "Songs in the Key of Life".

Vintage Synth Museum lists these artists as users of the Minimoog:
The Chemical Brothers, The Orb, Kraftwerk, Jan Hammer, Nine Inch Nails, Vince Clarke, Gary Numan, Add N To (X), Rick Wakeman, 808 State, Air, Future Sound of London, Bushflange, Chick Corea, Uberzone, Depeche Mode, Recoil, Tangerine Dream, Mouse on Mars, Apollo 440, Ultravox, Dave Holmes, Jean-Michel Jarre, George Duke, Blondie, Rush, Keith Emerson, Joe Zawinul and Herbie Hancock.

Easiest way to find that "sound" is to scoot over to Arturia's web page and listen to the demos of the Moog Modular V and the Minimoog V.

**edit** Oh, add to the list of users Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company (minimalists in the Steve Reich/Terry Riley mode) and David Borden of Mother Mallard. Led Zeppelin used it for strange sounds on Dazed & Confused. The Beatles used one on their Abbey Road album. PARLIMENT/FUNKADELIC definitely used it a lot on their bass lines . . . listen to Flashlight and it's way all over the place. Wendy Carlos also used it on the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orage.

Tomita's Snowflakes Are Dancing would also be a good place to start. Almost pure Moog.

FYI Moog Sounds ===>

There are lots of soundfonts full of many different types of mm bass and leads, filter sweeps, etc., like maybe at Hammersound and so forth, and many of them a very well made.

If anyone needs a particular 'custom' moog sound, lemme know. I won't be entering this months contest due to time constraints, etc., but I am happy to help out if I can. ;)
