LOL i already worked that one out, been milkin the crap out of it for about a year!!!!
also the intervals set by the black keys tend to 'quantise' you into a jazzy feel so if you have a transpose function on your controller you can try different modes by transposing up n down... further still you can transpose during playing so it sounds a bit more complicated...
anyway shhhhhhh ;p
shame the rhodes doesn't have one :s

I also really like his Chocolate City radio set ... there's a one hour MP3 set at the bottom of that first page you linked : http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib/ .... also, he did a two hour DJ set on Gilles Peterson's show once , which included his unreleased slow, funky remix of Jill Scott's "Long Walk" , definitely worth tracking down on Limewire etc.

As much as I like Jamiroquai, I'd hardly go as far to say he's representative of Funk as a genre. As for what the DJ's were playing, I'd hazard a guess that they'd play psuedo, poppy funk. Real funk is a bit more hardcore. I could sit here and list roll off a list of artists like Sly, Bootsy, Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns, Funkadelic, Parliament....
and a whole list of other shit...
It's all just different flies on the cowpat of funk to me....

heh. ok that's two negative posts from you, you asked for itkritikon wrote:I hate funk with a vengeance.
It used to drive me out of clubs...I'd go to some hardcore dance club years back, they'd play some excellent techno (or whatever) then towards the end of the night, when the DJ thought everyone was either bored or too out of it to notice, they'd throw on some crappy funk.
I love watching techno people "dancing", it's so funny. With that robotic equal-kik-on-every-beat, your body has what choice? Move on the beat or do nothing, bob up and down a bit, no wonder there's so many hard drugs in that scene - maybe so you can imagine there's a cross rhythm ?
With FUNK, on the other hand, your body movement is actually part of the rhythm. Tne african "social notion" of rhythm is that no one person (or instrumentalist) stresses the central rhythm , but "dance" around it , with the combination of dancers and musicians forming the overall rhythm... so when you hear a funky bassline, you nod your head to the beat, not to the offbeats that are being played ... i.e. the FUNK is created by the relationship between the bassline and your body. This is real dance music.
Techno-tarnce-electro-metal - they're kinda sad in the way that they "mimic" real dance musics like funk, latin, hiphop ..... with the monotonous kick drum replacing the Euorpean classical conductor , and clubs full of people bobbing along in symmetrical submission. Have you ever tried to move your hips in a separate rhythm to your upper body to trance? No ? Well you must be bad sex as well ...... .LOL flame on

funk? heh....if only.
This is the era of over-quantization, stale pop, glitch fart beats etc etc...basically everything BUT the funk

Love me some early Prince, Cameo, Midnight Starr, Loose Ends and of course the greatest gimmick band ever in the history of the world, The Time. Anyone hating on Jamiroquai, give Return of the Space Cowboy a once over.
Also I gotta pass this link on-it's well commercial funk, but a good listen none-the-less:

Someone needs to funk you up right about now! Time to stick George Clinton's Atomic Dogs on you!!!kritikon wrote:I hate funk with a vengeance.

Almost every club and every dickhead DJ did it. It used to drive me nuts. It'd ruin the vibe of the whole night - you know, when you're ready for one last mental epileptic fit on the dance floor, and some tedious funky chick music came on that brings you down completely.
Euuurggghhh!
It's just nasty.
Jay Kay and the like should be excommunicated, then hounded out of civilised society. And all DJs playing dance should be sent to re-doctrination sessions to learn the error of their insidious ways. Funk never did anyone any good. And it appears to be addictive. Anything chemical as evil as funk would have been classified as at least a class B by now, and you should get arrested for playing it. Any guitarist buying a wah-wah pedal in a shop should have it forcibly wrapped and packaged up his arse and be forced to ride home on a motorbike. It's a cancer on modern music. It's a putrifying serous herpes sore on the lip of any brass player. Stamp it out! Burn the CDs! In fact this thread should be locked and the author banned.

We have an amazing local funk act here called the "Wax Jackets".
I try and catch them whenever they play, can't help but bop to their grooves. Great to see someone carrying on the flame of funk.
