You don't normally need to sync the gate to a host clock, as it is already "synced", but it would be nice to have that option, too, for some "forced gate", yep.

Yes, GAC-1 gate is really great (there's some intelligence behind the 2 knobs). It is also the best gate I've heard...not heard...heard...not heard...DuX wrote:Gate from GAC-1 with more pots + 1xComp + maybe 1xEQ, but better with 1xlimiter at the end could be your next treat? GAG-1?[no pun intended...]

DuX,
i didn't really find the best explanation. With synced i mean converted envelope times. I currently have to use a delay calculator to translate beat measures into MS, it'd be cool if one would be able to just select beat measures (according to host tempo, thus 'synced') instead of ms.
hope that explains better

lunch money,
i think there's still a bit of misunderstanding here. i don't want to sync it to the host for 'trancegating' stuff. i'd like it to calculate the releasetime for me alongside beat measures instead of dragging milliseconds around. 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 would be just fine already. most of the time i attach a gate to a drumbus cutting everything off after a half beat. why on earth should a gate not be as 'clever' (actually we all know it'd be a really simple implementation) and do that easy maths for me?

Ultrafunk gate is on top of the list IMO. Recently I've been working on a drum kit trying to get a sound similar to that of Neu!2 and this one was a life saver for the low snare and kick mics. What really made the difference is the attack it allowed me and a very ample threshold. It also gave the sound a very round, warm quality, which saved me lots of EQing and compressing.
By using this gate I managed to get a very warm, dry sounding, in your face kit with lots of ambience which I could add or substract to taste.
Attack and threshold, to me, these are the two key points, plus I would definitely favour the analog sound.

Hey Greg - good to see ya!Lunch Money wrote:I still maintain that anyone this fussy about how a gate should work would be better off hand-editing the wave itself.
Greg
I have found that using (for example) the great noise reduction effect in Audition is a good and powerful way to do the bread and butter job of digitally getting rid of unwanted noise - in the past a gate might have been used for doing this. However, sometimes using the Ultrafunk Sonitus Gate (fantastic tool) leaves more of the original character intact. For that matter, using an effect such as Voxengo's Redunoise or the more expensive Waves/Sony/etc effects can produce very impressive results in real time.
But some will alternatively use Gate effects because they deliberately want to use the stutter effect that can be produced, for example, as a creative feature of a loop/sample/etc. I think Ronny wants to make creative use of a full-featured Gate in that sort of a way. I guess you could manually do that in a wave editor, but certainly not as a real time effect.
Probably though I'm missing the point entirely. I'm just thinking of some of the uses I personally put a Gate effect to

Good point. I wouldn't mind seeing that on a compressor, as an option for the attack/release times...Ronny Pries wrote:lunch money,

I don't have much time so this one'll be short. Yes, it is a good idea to have the option of showing times in measures, not in ms, however, very often, you have to be far more precise than that. Say, if you want a 0.1 or 1ms, or 3ms attack times, what measure is that? 1/1000?
An experienced mixer knows how many ms to use for everything, and it's not always on measure - it has to be fine tuned by ear. As for the release and hold times, they often sound better out of sync... but the option to show hold and release times in measures would be great
, so we could make it go perfectly in sync, if we want to, that is.
Cheers!

I quite often use a bit of gating/expansion to make basslines and drums a bit snappier - I'd love something that had an 'intelligent' look ahead function so it cleanly opens on each transient, but allowed me to be quite agressive with the release time.
I think you can get results using most gates with an eq sidechain and a/r, but it often ends up being a bit of a compromise, possibly due tothe resolution issues others have mentioned.
