Just watching a tape of Soft Cell doing the original on TOTP. All that subversive sexuality (slightly shocking at the time) is lost in SOS. Now it's just another pop song for todays teens so I suppose that shows how blase they are about such things.

isnt it? ironic, that ismunchkin wrote: It's a bit ironic having a thread complaining about SOS when Soft Cell covered the original version of 'Tainted Love'.
you have a point there!munchkin wrote: I thought Madonnas rip of Abba was quite ingenius but then she's always had the help of some clever people. I suppose it's what you rip and how it done that determines how clever and inspirational it is.

Sandi Thom was just on singing, 'I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair'. It's at no. 2 in the charts. Love the sentiment, not sure about the song. At least there are a few young musicians who have something interesting to sing about.

This is fun to watch
You know your generation has just been rendered "obsolete" when you hear a tune on the radio and think thoughts like "What has become of music today?" or "They've taken a classic and ruined it!" (my reaction upon first hearing Soft Cell's version of Tainted Love) or "Hey, this sounds JUST like xxxx, what a rip-off!" or "Does no one care about originality anymore?" or...
Music was BETTER when YOU were 18, damn it. It's all downhill from here.

Exactly. When I hear words like some of those in this thread, I can only imagine "Those damn Beatles need a hair cut!" being said through denturesCordelia wrote:This is fun to watch

SC's version was a cover tune, that's not the problem...it's when they take the ACTUAL music and re-present it as A NEW SONG....The Chase wrote:Finally someone with sense!stefancrs wrote:You guys are upset that she has borrowed the riff from the COVER version of Tainted Love? Were you upset when softcell used lyrics and everything from the original?
Pah.
It's a cool tune
i actually don't get the "for" arguement.....at all!
example:
"Summertime Blues" done by Eddie Cochran, The Who, and The Flying Lizards were all great versions... the latter two being covers bringing a new approach; a unique view toward the original, and being (imho) very successful at it...it's hard to explain to those growing up in the age of sampling why there is a difference when one simply lifts the ACTUAL MUSIC from the original vs. doing a COVER VERSION....

there is no "for" argument, its just the irony.
you know, she just took the beat, its her (or the songwriters) own vocal over it, that wasnt ripped of...

Music was shit when I was 18, and still is. Age has nothing to do with it, at least not on the level being described here.

And I said that's Ill already. I just dont get why everybody's flipping out about it, as if it's the first time it's been done. And it's not like theyre tricking anybody. EVERYBODY who hears it just listens to it as a remix of the familure "Tainted Love" anyway.Chuck E. If you dont like it then dont listen to it. I can't imagine not liking a peice of music enough to go home and start a thread about it.
