Bad skin? Not compared to its users.

Are you kidding? There is plenty of criticism to be levelled at FLS but its GUI is the all-time sexiest of any host I have come across. Its gorgeous, its sexy, its amazing. I'd be much more concerned about its workflow and non-standard window operation than anything else about the GUI. The FLS GUI is the benchmark across all hosts, instruments and effects IMHO and trying to change it is craziness. As for professional, the applications I work with every day range from around US$1000 to US$500,000 and you know what? They all sport dark grey, low-contrast GUI's so that operators can work for long periods of time without eye fatigue.Baniev wrote:this grey skin loks realy ugly IMO. All other hosts look way better than FL Studio which looks like some amateur program compared to the other programs...that grey color looks realy unprofessional...
Actually Maya has the look of a piece of $49 shareware to me. Its GUI is dreadful compared to all its rivals. Hopefully that is something we will address in future version as I now have to learn how to use it.XDVarenkor wrote:While we're at it, Photoshop doesn't support skinning: Ugh, how unprofessional! They used to in earlier versions but took it out in v3. They even did a Xmas skin for it at one time. I think the options they give you now are handy without ruining the overall look.rbet wrote:I never understood why IL didn't want to give users the choice of using skins;
ORION allows full customisation of both the look and layout of individual components. So you can make skins that improve usability as well as look different.Vonbrucken wrote:Please ONE MOMENT PEOPLE !!! just name audio applications that allow skinning
EnergyXT is comprehensively skinnable but only for looks.
Cool Edit 2000 allows for comprehensive editing of its colour scheme.
Interesting, but hardly surprising, that I am drawn [pun intended] to applications which allow me to customise their look and feel. Its an artist thing.
That may be true of speadsheet applications but I think a creative aaplication should encourage the user to play. I'd say some things, like KPT and Kai's associated products' GUI's, take it too far but FLS has it just about right.sgx wrote:"Professional" interfaces don't use sparkle - they have functional, clean, easy on the eyes design. KORG have been doing it for years, smart-arse. You had a choice of normal or inverted key colours on the Poly800 and the new microX comes in black or white.Lee702 wrote:yeah and they should start skinning hardware too
Turn your room lighting down. You shouldn't be staring at a screen in a brightly lit room anyway.RoyNoahJones wrote:The graphics are good, but the soft is way too dark in my opinion, i spend 12 hours a day on a daw, and i'm expecting a daw to be much fresher looking, on every major releases this is the first thing i check, so basicly i test FL for 3 mins , if the tones are the same as the early days, i just skip it and wait for the next major release.it is pointless for me to know the latest features, if i'll be stucked in an environment that makes me feel uncomfortable.

Why not? Looking at a screen, a lighted room is better on the eyes than a darker room. DUH!!BONES wrote:You shouldn't be staring at a screen in a brightly lit room anyway.

That was my point. Many industry standard professional apps don't support skinning, not least because they're more concerned with output than distracting the user with frivolous options. I was just pouring some sarcasm on the tired old criticism that FL (or any app for that matter) 'looks unprofessional'. 'Professional' is the person using it, FFS. You can hang your own wallpaper in FL - that ought to be enough. But OK, I'd like to complain about any FL users that sit in front of their computers wearing daggy clothes, listening with cheap headphones, or eating while making music - you're making the app look unprofessional.
Wow. I can't believe how grumpy I still am about this.

No it isn't, it promotes eye fatigue and reduces the effectiveness of the monitor, expecially if you are using flouroescent lighting. Working in film/television it has the added effect of warping the perception of colours on the screen which, obviously, is not relevant here except for the common sense matter of a wide pupil reducing you rperception of contrast on the screen. i.e. low light levels allow you to perceive what's on the screen more subtley. My studio has a single up-light in the corner furthest from my monitor at night and vertical blinds angled to provide very subtle lighting, no direct light at all, during the day. If I'm doing film/TV work I generally have the light off/blinds closed. I only turn the main light on when I need to see behind the PC or somethign to connect a cable, then I turn it straight off.satchnut wrote:Why not? I would also argue that such things are anything but frivilous. The more professional an application is, the more it needs to cater to individual user needs. Even Phohtoshop eventually had to move with the times and adopt customisable shortcuts.XDVarenkor wrote:That was my point. Zelda is still a little elf princess.
BONES is right, the correct amount of light surrounding the display should be 32-64 lux (ISO3664). It should be as even as possible, however. D50 (colour temp 5000 K, CRI/Ra) is the standard "colour" of light in colour critical applications.
However, unless you have lighting that fill that tone criteria it is best to do colour control in even natural light (mildly overcast daylight), so that the screen is of equal brightness with the rest of the room. Proper displays still show the shades of grey.

Same here! Nice discussion guys, i wasnt here and couldnt answer because i am in holidays and have no access to the internet. Ofcourse the Fl Studio skin looks gay, all other applications look way more professional and not like a toy like FL Studio does. I talked with qa guy here and he said it is frustrating that there pop up so much things and you cant see everything without changing the focus off the windows in fl studio if you understand me, in Reason it is way easier with the scrool bar, you hqave no problem to see everything at once. Ir is also way more colorful and you have way more fun to work with Reason than with the f**king grey skin of FL Studio. All cellphones have themes etc and this expensive music program in that you want spend many hours to make good music has just this ugly skin, unbelievable..jon wrote:Link is the elf dude,

Not trolling, but the GUI is so Nintendo it's a miracle that japs haven't sued Imageline. Of course this has nothing to do with making music with the app.
I´m on f**king fire!

Funny that the real 3D animators I know think the opposite. But then they dont confuse pretty pictures with a user interface the way you always do.BONES wrote:Actually Maya has the look of a piece of $49 shareware to me. Its GUI is dreadful compared to all its rivals.
Well if the one single UI improvement you've made in Maya8 is anything to go by, it seems highly unlikely.Hopefully that is something we will address in future version as I now have to learn how to use it.
Im sure you'll be calling yourself an expert in it in no time, though.
An idiot on Set Theory:
