I used to think that cheesy sounding music was usually born out of simple melodies and overused chord progressions, but there are plenty of popular and very simple songs that aren't cheesy e.g. John Lennon's "Imagine",

A friend was listening to this song the other day and I found the the vocal melody to be excruciatingly cheesy:
