A longer attack time is likely to exaggerate the transients, not tame them.
For me this is true anyway:

0ms-1ms attack = squash
5-10ms attack = tame
20ms and above = letting most of it through


I was comparing to the ones that dont have an attack knob and the attack is fixed at a very short value.

Where did you dig that rubbish up from? Don't go by the numbers: they don't mean anything.

i know they dont mean anything but this was just to illustrate.... can put other numbers there, it all depends on the material. Just what i meant with the word "tame" compared to squash :)

There's the T-RackS Multi-band Limiter. Actually, I find it very useful and use it a lot.
On tracks or buss?
I use it on the master buss usually limiting around 3 db depending on the track. Then it's followed by the Classic Clipper.
