*sigh* And yet ANOTHER KVR thread devolves into this pointless "Giant Squid Versus Colossal Squid" bickering. Can't we all just get along?

As far as the predelay, most of the settings of ValhallaShimmer result in the reverb "fading in" to a greater or lesser extent, which helps separate the reverb from the dry sound in the same way that a predelay does, but with arguably better sonic results. Lexicon achieves similar results (using different techniques) with their Shape/Spread controls in the 480L and later reverbs. Of course, you can always run the reverb off a bus, and use the delay plugin of your choice as predelay. Pretty much every DAW has a handful of delays on tap.

While my post might have contained an inside joke, I'm very serious about what I said. I'll be watching the development of Valhalla Shimmer like a hawk until its release.

I think Eos could be better. Maybe Valhalla Shimmer is my solution.

Flash forward 11 years, and I'm about to release my first commercial plugin, that is focused on getting really long and floaty reverbs. I'm using a much more refined algorithm, with a higher echo density and less coloration than my early work, but the same kind of spacey stuff I was shooting for in 1999. I guess I'm pretty consistent. Or obsessed. I just love this stuff.

I'm an artist and I use a program called Painter. Every time a new release comes out I go though the new brushes and fool around with them. Usually I never save my random doodlings. So I accidentally clicked "save" instead of cancel while trying to close a file like this and the app complained "untitled.rif" already existed and asked if I wanted to replace it. Curious, I opened the old file... and there it was. Other than the differences in brushes and brush qualities, it was like I tried to do the exact same doodles this time as I had done many years before. So I guess my "random" doodles are not so random.

Back OT, Can't wait to try your reverb!

I just got a Korg Monotron. After a night of beeping and booping through the built-in speaker, I recorded the results into Logic, with 4 series instances of ValhallaShimmer for good measure. Here's the results:

i just had a friend send me some monotron tracks for a song we were working on and used FreqEcho as a sort of filter. Man you make some good stuff.

That would require an intelligent pitch shifter. The pitch shifter in ValhallaShimmer is an old school "dumb" pitch shifter. It doesn't track the periodicity of the input signals, so it wouldn't know what note to bound things to.

Plus, applying feedback to such a system would result in an amusing series of pitch leaps, as it tries and fails to track the pitch of the reverb, when in fact the reverb has a whole bunch of pitches in it (due to feedback). Which might sound really cool, but see the part above about the pitch shifter in ValhallaShimmer being dumb.

Although ValhallaShimmer's pitch shifter can't track the pitch, it is designed to shift wide band signals without any of the metallic artifacts that traditionally plagued pitch shifters in this shift range. So, in that sense, it is smart. Maybe it's a "savant" pitch shifter...

Super excited about this! Please make a mailing list so I can buy it as soon as it is released The "shimmer" effect is one of my favorites. It was really interesting reading about the history of it, thanks. It inspired me to buy a (cheap)pitch shifter/harmonizer so I could experiment with one in a feedback loop with reverb.

Currently, I use guitar pedals to get the shimmer effect. The Line 6 verbzilla octo reverb effect and the Behringer RV600 space setting. The Behringer is a a little more vocal sounding and the Line 6 is more stringy or organy. I can't afford the Strymon blueSky pedal, but from the sound demos it sounds very ethereal/floaty. From the demos ValhallaShimmer seems to be able to do the Line 6 and Behringer and I bet some eq could get the blueSky sound.

I guess my only concern is that there will be no way to make it sound bad aka experimental. I mean when I set up the feedback loop I got some real junk sounds, but also some really fresh sounds too. Playing with feedback and self oscillation are the biggest reasons I still use analog devices. I'm looking forward to what else you come up with!
