i'm no doctor but i think the lack of sleep is a problem many artists have. i think its the way the artists mind processes info. the mind is always on and if you can't turn your mind off you won't be able to sleep proper.

i can't fall asleep with any kinda of noise. i need to build a soundproof room to sleep in i think... living in nyc doesn't help my cause at all

Keep things as dark as possible. There's increasing evidence that the pineal gland, which excretes necessary neurochemicals for sleep, has a hard time functioning properly if there is light stimulating the optic nerve. I went a very long time with a lamp on in my room because for some reason I found it comforting, but I no longer do that and I think my sleep has improved.

As far as white noise being a crutch, my counter question to that would be: are a comfortable bed and pillow a crutch?

I use to be beyond anal about darkness, so much so that you didn't know when it was night and day. I do need a way to make this room darker but we have a problem...meet the problem

That window is hard to fit for anything darkening

That is indeed a tall window. Does it face east?

I was thinking about going to a fabric store and getting heavy black material, cut to precision, weighting the bottom and using these hooks Image upside down and backwards to hold...basically having the pinching part hold the material while the point catches on the upper window frame. I could devise a pole to set it in place

:o :o :o :o :o

That window's a cruel joke.

Ditch the blinds -- they're useless. Specialty shades/curtains are your only solution, even if you have to improvise. (I once used beach towels. :hihi:) In the meantime, maybe you could add some tinted film?

It just BEGS for some long shutters.....

well the blinds will go for sure, I've used heavy blankets and even gone as far as covering a window with cardboard. However then I had nothing to see out my window and when we're awake my wife really enjoys the light while I often open the blinds on the all the windows in the room...so it has to be temporary and easy to put in place. The only other problem is getting up to the top to remove the current blinds I have a step ladder but not that tall...maybe I'll rent one of those fold up ladders for an hour

103" so about 8 1/2 feet, this picture shows an apartment just like ours across the way on top. From the long balcony to the slope, the entire sloping part is the master bedroom and you can see a sliver of the 1/2 bath off the master between the window and the balcony (a window in the bathroom does not bring a tear to my eye). Of course on the other side is the long window and also facing that side is my daughters bedroom with a flat ceiling (and her own balcony, but smaller). The only difference between the apartment in the picture and ours is our big balcony overlooks a hill covered with pine trees and nestle in the tress so it's like a treehouse :tu:

You can get blackout curtains at most discount stores (Target, Wal-Mart). These are the kind you can find in some hotels. They're very affordable and do a fantastic job of not only blocking out light but reducing noise as well. Cheap alternative: A dark color bedsheet folded over several times. I've utilized that in many places. Mainly to block the sun from turning the room into an oven in the Texas summer.

the problem is the height of the window, 103"

BTW that room has incredible natural reverb with the height of the ceiling on one end and it's hardwood floors 8)

Any fabric store should have some curtain material that would cover that window. We have one window here that is 110" in length. We went with 120" and about 60" width for ours as it is only 36" wide. You may need to have it specially cut to the dimensions that will fit the window in this case..

that's what I said above :hihi: Then I'll use those hooks backwards to hang it on the upper edge of the window frame. To put it in place I'll make a long handle, put a nail in the side of the frame (little iddy biddy nail) to hold the handle. I dont want a curtain rod or anything I would rather it be there or not and no blinds. If I weight them and cut the length precise then they should do the job.

If I had a back yard I think I would dig an underground bunker and sleep there.

Maybe even live there.
