Oh crap here we go....I just ordered a new computer with Win 7 so is it going to be a problem installing and running IK plugins ? (I have a bunch).

I'm a virgin to Win 7 so all this "Run as Administrator" stuff is a bit confusing...now I remember why I've clung on to Win XP for so long......

So what is the proper instal method for TRacks CS and Amplitube CS ?

Anyway, just re-install whatever plugins are giving you issues, but instead of double-clicking on the installer to run it, right-click and do "Run as Administrator." That should install them with proper admin rights so that you no longer have to explicitly run them as admin any more.
THAT is worth a try. And if it's really working and not mentioned in the IKM FAQ's, then it's about f*cking time!

chj wrote:For all those that have to 'run as administrator' when using IK plugins. This requirement blocks access to any presets created on a user account. For example, any Native Instruments presets. Once you start your DAW as an administrator, you will only have accesss to presets saved on your admin account, which for many of us, will be only the default presets and none of our custom presets.

There is a workaround. Copy all user account presets to admin account, add the admin folder to the NI plugin database, save all your future presets there.

There may be plugins from other companies that save presets in user account folders as well. I'd be interested to know if people are having this same problem with other plugins once IK's Authorization Manager forces them to run their DAW as administrator.

Even if you are not having trouble with presets. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this 'run as administrator' requirement. As an analogy, if a company's plugins required you to enter a password every time you started your daw, YOU WOULD FREAK OUT RIGHT? Well the 'run as adminstrator' requirement is exactly that. Every time I run my DAW, I have to enter my administrator password if I want to use IK plugins. It's ridiculous.

This shit has gone on too long. Thankfully we are getting to the nitty gritty.

This is a mine field. For too long have developers obfuscated their tech support answers.

We are going deep. We are contacting the security administrators. For too long we have been ignored. Yeah, power to the DAW users...

To Admin, or not Admin, that is the question...

And what does it mean if you just install 'As Admin' and then use as a standard user or from a Limited User Account?

;-)

A lot of clever people think they know the answer, but only a few shall be listened to. And the developers of the DAWs are not as clever as you think.
They are the ones that f***ed up your installation after all. ;-)

But then again, you paid for it. So maybe you have some rights, uh?

Thanks sockofgold. Appreciate the advice. But after following the instructions rote, no luck. Tried uninstalling and then reinstalling all IK products with the Run As Administrator and no luck.

I don't care if some people think it's no big deal to have disable all User Account settings or to have to log in as an administrator every time but I find it annoying as f**k and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way.

I actually love Windows 8 and have had much better performance than any other OS but IK stuff is the only programs that I personally use that don't play nice so it seems like a hassle to go through all this. There's gotta be a better fix than this.

Well apparently the safest way is to right click the installation file and click "Run As administrator" and then install. I did this and didn't have any problems initially because I was just using Amplitube Custom Shop. But then when I bought one of the IK Singles and downloaded, then everything went up the creek. And uninstalling and reinstalling hasn't been able to fix it. Best of luck with that.

The key for me is running my DAW (Studio One 2.5.1) with admin privileges. I have Windows Compatibility settings to do that automatically, so I don't even have to think about it.

Just a quick reminder that I've written an in-depth guide on how to get IK stuff running WITHOUT the need to run the DAW with elevated rights (because that is just plain wrong): http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=367916

I haven't had much feedback until now, so I wonder if it doesn't work or if people are just not interested.

Post

Yeah, you should run all installers as admin, most do it on their own though. But if you don't get the annoying UAC prompt when you install, do it again as already described by right-clicking and selecting "run as admin".

If you still have problems, can right click on the application and/or the dll (VST) file and look at the 'Security' tab. Make sure 'authenticated users' have full rights, that will give you the same result as running it in admin. If that fails, give 'regular users' full rights as well.

Check this for any .exe file associated with the plugin in /Program Files/ (like a standalone version), the .dll in your VST folder and if it still fails, the DAW's executable.

Last ditch is giving "all application packages" in the Security pane full rights as well.

Running the DAW as admin is a nightmare and not recommended IMO. It means that you have to run everything you want to use with it as admin as well, and things like the File Explorer can't be run as admin, so you can't drag from the explorer.

//edit
This is effectively what paterpeter writes in step 3 in the linked post.

Hi wasi,

that doesn't work for me. Haven't tried paterpeters workaround but I'm not f**king with the registry. Having to go to that extent is rediculous imo.

I hope that OK actually makes an effort to fix this problem in future releases. If this isn't seen an a real issue there is something wrong. If you look at the Reaper thread, that forum is on offer with people up in arms about this.

ive had admin issues with sampletank ever since I updated to windows 8, so i tried to reinstall as admin as suggested.
Still throws an error about saving when vst is loaded in FLStudio, and for some reason it doesnt even show in the browser in Live.

its frustrating as i havent had an issue like this with any other plugin.
I'd love it to be fixed but I cant see it being updated (its seems to have been abandoned in favour of ST3), so im just going to give up and uninstall. :(

A real and proper multi-user system has the admin install
software, and then manage and create users and groups as desired,
and assign permissions to them, to access hardware, software, and data.
As desired.

I have no confidence that microsoft can, or even wants, to do that.
And no experience with Apple. But in linux, it is trivial to run
a file manager gui as admin, and change the permissions on the
contents of any folder (899 user presets?) to suit my desires.
Amplitube patches permissions allow the user to read/write,
the admin (group = root) to read/write, and others to view.
Cheers

(for security, a daw should have a great password, and no auto-login)
Thieves want your stuff :-o )
