Wait for an 'important' sports event to be on.

I paid £80 for one on ebay last year because some footballers were footballing on TV.

Or look at the SOS readers ads, they tend to be far more reasonable.

Just out of curiosity what would football have to do with the price of a synth ? :?:

presumably because a lot of people who might have been on ebay are distracted by the telly

same reason i like to find auctions that end in the night or during work hours, less bid competition in the final moments ;)

Hmmmm I suppose that makes a little sense. :)

I make soundtracks for custom enthusiast Tomb Raider games (see trle.net). The old TR games used the JV-1080 sounds almost exclusively. So I had to pick one up. Well, I ended up with a JV-2080 and have 7 of the eight expansion slots filled. IMO, that's the way to go - get the 2080 and fill it with expansions. I feel like with Omnisphere and this one rack unit I have Eric Persing's "greatest hits."

Regarding the expansions, I would add that imo the FX card really sucks. I find it almost useless, it sounds dated and flat, and I do a LOT of FX for the games. Really, you're better off recording your own and going out to freesound.org. I would also add that the Latin card is amazing...amazing brass and percussion you won't find anywhere else. I also love the world and orchestral cards.

SayersWeb wrote:Omnisphere may suit the OP well... It costs about as much as a romper, but offers a huge library and a great synth engine as well. Eric Persing, who is behind Omnisphere, designed many of the factory sounds for the Roland romplers.
+1

Wikipedia: "The core sampled waveforms of the JV-1080 were developed by Roland R&D-LA in Culver City, California. Many of the most well-known Factory presets and Xpansion board sounds of the JV-series were created by Eric Persing of Spectrasonics and Ace Yukawa."

So Omnisphere should be a good option for the OP, as Persing have put a bit of his soul in both products ;)

I love Omnisphere. I haven't yet plumbed its depth, and I doubt I ever will.

Better still - the XV-5080, filled with expansions (both SRX and the regular JV ones).
The 5080 has a better sounding engine and more synthesis options, will load all the 1080 and 2080 patches, has a lot of the JD990 stuff in it and it's response to MIDI is a lot better with dense parts. Plus you can bung 128MB of sample ram and use your own samples too...

I needed to have as many JV expansions as possible. I needed the classic TR sounds so I went for the 2080, which has a lot more JV slots than the 5080.

Your opinion folks, JV-2080/3080 vs. XV-3080 which one is better sounding?

Exately the same setup as I still have. BTW, someone mentioned the Quadrasynth, which I also own, including some really nice expansion sample cards. H.

I'm really impressed with the Quadrasynth S4 rack module. It does have some issues with the display back light and it seems like that's an issue with several Alesis units. Do you have the keyboard version ? Can you recommend some expansion cards. I think I could find some on E-Bay.

Have you found an Editor Librarian program for the Quadrasynth ? :)

Although I don't really use the sounds on it much anymore, I still love my old Roland XP80 (which has the JV1080 sound engine). Serves as a really good master keyboard thanks to its amazing velocity and aftertouch response.

Hi, my Q-synth is keyboard version Piano Plus, including inbuild piano sound, I just checked the PCMCIA cards I have, these are Vintage Keyboards, Hip-Hop grooves and World Ethnics + SRAM card. Especially the piano sounds and many vintage synths (e.g. one of the first really cool Strawberry Flute) are great. My Roland SRX cards are Concert Piano, Dynamic Drums, Bass&Drums, Symphonique strings and Big Brass ensemble. H.
