Hmm, thanks for the reminder - I've meant to revisit Mobius at some point and forgot up to this moment.

I might just go with a simple ableton looper instance and drag n drop it's results to different tracks (I only use arrange mode, session mode is too non-linear, I'm weird, I know)

With Live's easy Midi learn it is pretty easy actually. Just watch this tutorial video, made with your same FCB1010 controller and Live.

You can make it as simple or complex as you like. Just stick to some basic controls like record/stop/play and track selection like you would have on the most basic of hardware pedal loopers.

I am still a noob when it comes to actually using and assigning midi controllers or actually using external midi control for an fx plug besides using my midi keyboard with mod wheel and pitch bend, but Live makes it easy to map any midi control.

Is this the controlled drone/ambient stuff you are trying to do? (Mobius used)

stuff like this

I listen to each one and its like WTF?! Made on a 4 track tape recorder I think only with guitars and fx. Each track sounds SO different.

It's freaking awesome. But I would make it with more "song" qualities, like my other tracks (The Consolation Project link in my sig)

ps. thanks for that fcb1010 link, I'll def check it out. It's these links that somehow I haven't found yet, until now!

I love all the tips in this thread, perfect for my current drony project. Haven't got around to trying the tips yet, but I'm quite sure they will yield some useful results!

yeah, I'm really grateful at the response that everyone has been contributing, this is really helping me a lot! I still feel like there's something major that I'm missing out on when it comes to making drones though :)

must be experience

Post

Hahaha classy post, HMA.

I've been doing what I've been doing for about 15+ years. I have done my own work with reversed loops and distortion, layered reverb... I definitely feel that I've got my own sound and know generally how to get sounds that I really want accurately. But yeah, I guess it is "Experience" that I am missing because I don't generally do "Drones". This is why I wanted to see what tips everyone uses in their own workflow, you know, people who have been making drones since 1998 or something ;)

I really think it's a wise thing to ask about these things on the forum because there's a wealth of knowledge on here, with severely talented minds.

I prefer to use Audiomulch for drones but Ableton is quite capable also.

Anyway, one granular vst I like to throw in the mix: http://argotlunar.info/

If only Audiomulch would implement the VST version that was on the cards at one time - could you imagine that loaded in Live...? :-o

well, damn! A realtime granular effect! I'm kind of wondering why the hell I haven't found this anywhere. I must be blind! I'll def chk this one out!

I know Ross (AM's author) is considering either VST or Rewire. I know it's on the future menu. When it will happen is another story.

Somebody mentioned KTgranulator somewhere in this thread also: http://koen.smartelectronix.com/KTGranulator/

What's it like for processor hit? I like to do some granular stuff, but so far I have found the Ableton Live tools the lowest for processor hit. I've used Reaktor but end up freezing tracks - this thing looks pretty tweakable and would be great to use if it was a low processor hit.

Lol oh man, if it's not obvious yet, I must warn ya: I can be severely absent minded

I might not be a good reference in that regard since I have a core I7. For me it doesn't use much cpu. The more grains you use, the more cpu it uses. Pretty much like the one in audiomulch.
