Yep, you have to delete stuff to free up "time". As someone over in the Music Café pointed out, the other "problem" is the 99 download limit, if you're enabling downloads for better quality listening. Of course, deleting and re-adding the track works if you don't care about the stats.

Both are reasons I'm hosting my own now - it's just easier. As I said - not as pretty, though.

nine euros a month, actually. for twenty nine euros you get 36 hours.
also the 9 euro per month package enables unlimited downloads.

about the sound quality - i've honestly never noticed any degradation - on my own stuff anyway.

easy to use, and everyone seems to be on it......are there many better alternatives?

Because I don't like it. The players with the song display look like dog muck and the permanently up-popping comments make the listening no pleasure, too.

I have to close my eyes to enjoy the music - otherwise I'm always looking at this...well...dog muck song display (what I mean is the wave form of the song)...and this superficial, less convincing comments like "Oh, good", "Wow, nice intro", "Cool sound", "My dog sounds similar", "It's like trance" etc.

What do you think about it? Do you love SoundCloud? Do you hate it? What is good on SoundCloud, what isn't? Can you convince me to make a SoundCloud account?
As a listener, I don't particularly care for the things you mentioned.. namely the comments popping up.. makes it hard to select another section of the music if I want to fast forward or jump back and listen to a particular portion again..

Theres other things which I can't 100% vouch (proof) so I won't say.. but I am not sure I'd give them my money or financial infos and post my own music there. :)

Soundcloud has been very good for me. I've got airplay on real radio station from around the world with the contacts I have made with this site, never got better results with the others (myspace, bandcamp, etc...).

Edit: They mention soundcloud in this documentary about bedroom producers:

Without soundcloud I'd be at least 50% less happy, probably. Where I live, very few people are interested in the sort of music I make, and most music communities like ElectronicScene etc just aren't what they used to be, and are swamped with the same old "urban dance beatz" shite and little else these days.

Thanks to soundcloud, I'm able to share my music with complete strangers, and I've got some pretty interesting people in my list, I even collaborate with a couple of them. Their interest in my output really fills a void, as does their music, and all the stuff I discover on there from random trawls.

Only had a total of 2 urban dance/money-hop crap spammers leave their generic spam on my site so far, that's a pretty good S/N ratio :)

Something I noticed this week. I acquired 2 new followers  (who I had never heard of). I tried to go to their profile to figure out their motivation for following, and their accounts had been suspended. Does this signal a change in SoundCloud enforcement policy?

This morning I listened to a track by somebody I was following and noticed a comment from someone who I had noticed 12 hours earlier promoting a FB link on a track by somebody else I was following. That person's account now appears to have been deleted.

Maybe those doggies hunt after all :)

TBH I dunno anything whatsoever about Soundcloud. But then I don't have anything to do with MP3s. Simply doesn't interest me. Mind you, I must be about the only human being on the planet that also doesn't have a Facebook account either. Not going to any time soon.

I presume Soundcloud is about telling people about what music you're into rather than the music itself (which is what so intensely irritates me about all of the social sites).

Y'know, I got a new desktop only a couple of months ago, and it was crammed full of all kinds of shite about uploading everything, sharing everything, syncing all my files with the rest of the world and syncronising it with my mobile, my TV, my iPod, my iTwat and my i-something else. First thing I did was delete all of the icons and delete the programmes if I could. Most of them were undeletable though. Maybe I presumed wrong, but I lumped Soundcloud in with that pile of shite... :x

soundcloud has got me a wider audience, the class war karaoke guys found me through soundcloud and theyve been very nice guys to deal with :)

no. it's about sharing the music you make. you should take a look at it instead of just writing it off as just another social network site.

Not quite ... Soundcloud is attempting to be the "Youtube of audio" - somewhere for normal folks to upload / share their own music, and listen to others. The "social" side is mainly about following other users so you are notified if they upload new tracks. It's a good service, IMHO ... hope it lasts ...

Peace,
Andy.

I don't like the fact that there is no sort option for the Groups feature. I may visit a Group, only to find the first page filled with songs a year old or more. It's a challenge to locate new uploads.

Also, the Search feature that helps you find local musicians could be improved too. Again, no way to discover who's new. The Soundcloud folks have a decent product, but they don't update frequently enough. I know they have a relaunch coming, but that's been more than a year in the making. I wonder how many have moved on out of frustration. I may actually go back to the free service after having paid for pro for one year.

+1

It's a good way of getting your music heard by a wider audience. I got one EP released as a result of that, with another one due next month, to be followed by an album :-o

Mind you. I bet all sorts of automated analysis could be performed on the stats and comments on there. Could be a useful marketing tool, although that would require some serious noise filtering.

TBH it could be a lot better. I wish they included a few more social elements, like miniblogging functionality or chat. I realize these aren't their core aims, but it really seems like it could feel more of community. Now that no one goes on IRC anymore, soundcloud could be a great place to geek out with fellow musicians (since, let's face it, soundcloud is pretty much 100% musicians and 0% non-musician fans).

At the moment, it feels like you're mostly just throwing songs into a vacuum and watching stats accumulate, with the occasional friendly song comment here and there.

Also, something's really inefficient with their player implementation code - opening up a soundcloud page can manage to make my 2011 MBP slow to a crawl, which a single webpage with a bunch of tracks on it shouldn't be doing.

I'm surprised nobody has made a soundcloud killer yet. Seems like the bar isn't all _that_ high. Bandcamp seems kindof cool, although I find their brand name a bit embarassing =P (it also doesn't have much in the way of a musician community either).

Post

I really enjoy soundcloud, but unfortunately it leans much more towards social networking than it does music. There's something offputting about listening to a track that sounds like complete garbage and seeing kiss-ass comments pop up from the over hundreds of followers the person somehow has.
