I agree with you about the pad controller. Another nice thing about them is that each pad is pressure sensitive giving you poly aftertouch in any device that will support it. I use a MPC and a regular keyboard with my other hand, but I have a QuNeo coming in the mail when they get released.

In regards to metasurface, a trackpad, magic trackpad or small Wacom tablet are also nice solutions to controlling it.

I'm still learning the FCB1010 foot controller. I'm currently using it for boring utility things like switching patches or transposing octaves, but I'm working on using it more like an instrument.

Ableton Live is great, just give it a try, i has all functions that people need... :)
