BTW, ALL buddhists believe in reincarnation, otherwise there aren't buddhists. But they also believe that it's possible to escape the circle of samsara (the world we live in with all the reincarnations) by practicing meditation.

But at the age of 47, I think it's to early to get out of samsara...

There are Buddhist schools that have retained a lot of their religious heritage, with the roots going back to Vedic beliefs, which are also a precursor to modern-day Hinduism. Hence the belief in reincarnation, superhuman deities/demons and the definition of Karma that these two share. These can primarily be found in south-east Asia, and in Tibet. Other Buddhists (especially of the Chan/Zen school) reject these kinds of beliefs. To them, there is no before or after, there is only ever an unbroken now. Our view of space-time as a straight line is, to these Buddhists, an illusion, just as our idea of the world being made of distinct objects is a superficial illusion. A Zen Buddhist would probably not say anything at all, he would rather perform some sort of act that occurred to him intuitively.
He would also very likely not post on KVR.

Sorry for OT, I think Yauch was of the Tibetan persuasion, so perhaps "Rest til you return" is appropriate.

That is incorrect. I would even contend that people who "believe" in anything haven't actually understood Buddhism at all, or that any attempt to define a Buddhist is like eating the recipe instead of the meal, but that would definitely derail this thread.

The most Zen buddhists I have known believe in rebirth and reincarnation. But they are practicing Zen because they want to get out of it.

It is not said that a Zen buddhist wouldn't post on KVR. There are some advanced buddhists that still make music. As long as you live in samsara, you have to do some samsara things, you can't sit there and meditate the whole day without doing anything (not even in the monastry).

So I don't know how much advanced Yauch was (as a buddhist), but 47 is too early to die...

The most Zen buddhists I have known believe in rebirth and reincarnation. But they are practicing Zen because they want to get out of it.

Too bad Rinzai is long dead, he would whack them with a stick until they realized their foolishness.

Seriously, and last post on this topic, reincarnation and rebirth are symbols, not reality. You're not really eating the body of Christ at communion. Samsara is a metaphor, often poorly understood.
If you want to go on believing in symbols, that is good if it makes you and others happy. But it usually doesn't. It's just another way to inflate the ego and to distract from life.
