I got the FG-X awhile ago, also at a deep discount. Money very well spent.

I'm not an engineer and have only a rudimentary understanding of compression and limiting. My tortured existence with mastering has been largely hit or miss. I try all the plugs, buy quite a few of them, and hope for the best. Ease of use is key for me.

The FG-X works for me. It actually brings my finished stuff closer to the level that I imagine it should be. People talk about 'gluing' tracks together. This does that. Makes the entire piece sound like it really belongs together,instead of just a collection of tracks scotch-taped together.

I use Slate's presets as a start, usually with some very minor tweaking to get where I want.

I use Elephant, but also Theo, the Adaptive Limiter that comes bog-standard in Logic is actually very, very good, depending on what you're looking for.
