Recommend an accurate software vocoder?

Vocodex is probably the most versatile Vocoder out there.
It's also one of the best sounding ones (depending on the carrier and settings of course).
It also can provide excellent speech intelligibility.

I hear good things about vocodex all the time, but at the same time, i'd also never give a cent of mine to image line.

Anyways ... I'm sure you could get pretty similar results with Vocodex, if you just use the right carrier-sound.

Yes, Vocodex is a hell of a beast, one of Image Lines finest moments.
That and the ELS Vocoder are the two I have. ELS is great for that vintage texture of sound, whilst Vocodex is more modern sound and extremely versatile.

Since 1970s, when Herbie Hancock released Sunlight and Feats Don't Fail Me Now, I wanted to try that sound. I believe he used a Bode Vocoder, but I could be mistaken.

I reckon that stuff is a talk box, not a vocoder. With that in mind, I'd recommend you check out a (hardware) Heil HT-1 Talkbox. They're small in size, not just for guitars(!), and you can find them for under $150 online. Controlling audio with the shape of your mouth is fun! If you've never tried it I totally recommend you go down that path first, even with the non-ITB inconvenience.

Software wise I'm partial to vintage sounds and people say Eiosis Vocoder is good for that, but I remember being pretty unimpressed by it personally. I think Vocodex is very good. But, if I remember right, does it still use a Fruity Loop file format for its internal engine presets, meaning you need to use Fruity Loops to generate sounds using the internal synth engine?! I still haven't properly checked Lector out yet because it's a bit pricey, for what it is, and I have other stuff with vocoder options already. But that's what I'd look at along with Vocodex.

BTW - If I remember right (been many years) I don't think the Triton's vocoder is that bad with the right material to drive it. But stuff like Vocodex is better..

Ahh. One of the most expensive/rare vocoders out there then. I'd need to re-listen, but my memory says the usage sounds more like a talk box than what people traditionally associate with vocoders. For that reason I reckon, even if it's a vocoder, an HT-1 would maybe be a better idea (when going for that sort of sound) than the software mentioned..

I downloaded the Vocodex demo last night and it's a 32-bit app, installing as a 32-bit vst dll "effect."

Gonga, if you want more natural sounding, just dont apply full vocoder or make 2 separate audio tracks, 1 with vocoder and another one without vocoder, that will give you the more "natural" souding

No, never thought that because I know for a fact it's pure vocoder (Herbie said so and he won a Grammy - so it must be true!)

I don't want the doubled sound - I want pure vocoder to bind the chord voices together and to give a punchy attack - it's an amazing sound. Though I admit, I'll never achieve what Herbie did with teh Sennheiser.

I like the vocoder sound Tommy Mars had when he was playing with Zappa, not sure how he made the sound, what he used etc., but it was great. =)

Yes, I just watched the videos of that thing.
It introduces further filter artefacts and heavy saturation on every single band, which is just not covered in any Software Vocoder I know.

One could probably get in that direction by self building a vocoder by doing just the right kind of routing in a mixer.
I once had built a vocoder by using the Fruity Peak Controller in FLStudio to control the loudness of the bands. It's not really complicated but a lot of work to set everything up (especially if you want to have halfway convenient controls in the end).
Then you can easily put saturation and other effects on every single band.
