I like gear changes, sometimes.

Here's an example of it built into the songwriting, as opposed to an arrangement afterthought.

Pretty effective. :)

You're not being derivative if you write through and for yourself. There's so much music out there what you do is bound to sound like something else, but you can't help but sound like yourself so there will always be an individual quality as long you put enough of yourself in there.

I just did a gear change in a song of mine. It wasn't intentional. It was just a shift from the chorus back to verse. Somehow it got there and felt natural, but when I cycled back to go again it had that feel about it.

But I liked it. It was natural and not forced.
But boy did it have that truck driver's feel.
It's ok. I'm going with it.
It was just the ordinary thing to do.

At least it wasn't the second chorus in the lead out and I had nowhere else to go.

Interesting.
