this is free o.p. and will even allow you to use both vst instruments and effectsits a bit different though then a daw like reaper but you will get used to it. this is pretty much your first and last option on windows in terms of free with no restrictions.

Renoise! free unlimited time demo, but you can't export to wav.

Sunvox also, this one has some pretty sweet node-based instrument building engine. And it's free on windows.

Each track has 2 built-in effects racks, plus slots for 4 DX/VST effects.bharris22 wrote:The OP can also try the free version of Samplitude 11:

Limited to 8 tracks, and I believe there may be a limit as to the number of VSTs per track.
The project can only contain 4 VSTi instruments, and it doesn't support DXi instruments (which seems to be a Samplitude limitation for all versions).
Obviously there are some other differences, but it's actually a very feature-rich program considering the price.
One caveat that I've found... it has a buffer related bug that shows up with Cakewalk synths, but it can be worked around easily enough.
All DAWs sound alike... except when they don't.

CC4's list is pretty good. If you don't want to waste your time, I'll be straight with you. There aren't many options. Here are some of the better ones without serious restrictions:CC4 wrote:I would suggest taking some software trials of some commercial products for comparison, and you might find something that's on the cheaper side that gives you a little bang for you dollar. I will say that I am a fan of a commercial product like FL Studio that offers lifetime free updates ($49-$399). Ohm Force is also currently offering that on OhmStudio for early adopters (currently $239 - price fluctuates). There's also some cheap things worth taking a demo of, like IMEA Sequencer which costs only €36 or Podium for $50, energyXT which is currently €39, or the many other cheaper options available.
There are quite a bit of free music making options, especially if you like the tracker style interface. Some notable examples are: Aodix v4, MadTracker, Buzz, Buzztard, Psycle, SunVox, etc.
Depending on your platform and what features you desire, you could try these free options: DarkWave Studio, Acid Xpress 7, Temper, Aria Maestosa, Frinka, Traverso, Muse, Sekaiju, Qtractor, LMMS, Tonescape, NanoStudio, etc.
There's also a sticky thread on this subject:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=343187
1) Reaper 0.99 - Anything from Reaper 1.0 and onward can be used as a cripple-free demo but you are expected to pay for it if you use beyond 30 days. The midi is not all that great and this was Reaper when it was in its infancy.
2) Podium - This is very full-featured. The only differences it that it is not multicore unless you buy the full version so it is not nearly as efficient as most DAWs you would pay for. But there's no track limitations or fx limitations. The interface is a bit unconventional and could possibly be too confusing for a newbie
3) LMMS - This is is fairly full-featured and has improved since its inception from Linux but is very buggy.
4) Macaw - It looks like a straightforward DAW with modular routing. I haven't tried it personally but it seems full-featured.
There you have it....Those four are the recommendations. If you didn't care about the limitations Mulab and Samplitude Silver are the best free but it's hard to get any real project done with the limited number of tracks, lack of full multicore processing, and limited vst effects.
There's also Kristal Audio Engine (16 tracks available but only two inserts), Mulab (less than 8 tracks, can't remember how many are available in the recent version), Acid Express (another lmited track count), Samplitude Silver (only 8 tracks). They all have limited track counts. Kristal Audio has the most but it also has limited inserts. You may be able to get around the limitation of vst insert effects by using an fx chainer but this can be cumbersome. Among these Kristal is the most useful because of the track count but I like Samplitude and Mulab the best. Those are great programs but a only a shell of the full program. Also many of these programs aren't multicore so you don't get many instances.
I want to tell you though that most of these are trackers and not DAW. Trackers are really fun for a lot of people, especially if you like dance, trance, hip hop, snyths, or any type of electronic music. But they are very different than DAWs. The layout is totally different. Instead of the beats and measures running horizontally, they run vertically. Also you have to route everything manually. You don't add inserts like in DAWS for effects. You add modular threads that need to be pointed towards an input and it can get really messy.
Some of the better trackers are Auodix and Psycle created by the same guy from Spain that tragically passed away. Darkwave Studio is also a tracker many like.
temper, traverso, darkwave... all trackers.
There's also a bunch of Wave editors that others might recommend to you like Wavosaur or Audacity. You can't track with fx on these live. They are what is implied. Wave editors. It's not a full DAW with a live mixer etc... Big difference
Anyways, that should save you a lot of time wasted because I checked out almost all of the ones mentioned beore I stepped up to payware DAWS.

It seems you can add ASIO support to LMMS on windows:
