Glad you're going the route of learning an instrument. You don't really even need to master an instrument to be able to play expressively, you just need to be able to realize that expression by having an adequate ability in the instrument.

Theory is good too, as long as you use it as a tool and not as a crutch.

But when we get together, I tend to be the only one who really and truly has a software development *vocation.* For others, it's something you do for a job, meaning there's something else you'd rather be doing, and the minute you step away from your workplace, you've got no connection to it whatsoever. To me, that's weird -- and tragic.
Oh hell no. It's great and healthy. Being passionate about your job is what gets weird and tragic - I've known people like that. One wanted a new laptop before his Hawaiian vacation, so he could get up early in the morning and get some work done before his wife woke up and made him stop working. I sure as hell don't want to end up like that.

Going home from work and not giving a rat's ass about anything there until 8 AM the next day sure feels better than going home from work and catching yourself thinking about solving some work problem.

Why does anyone start to make music or learn an instrument?

Surely for the pleasure.

The question can be asked of any artform.

You don't have to be good at it or original, most people aren't, just enjoy the act of creation.

Learning a real instrument is indeed a good idea. I play ukulele (they are very collectible, even worse than guitars!) and kalimba. Probably not very traditional choices, but I'm having fun with these. :) Didn't want anything larger than an uke, and tenors are already only borderline portable.

I dont' enjoy listening to my music. I know why, it's not that good :)

(I listen to a lot of music, and cannot stop comparing it to my own (poor) creations. I guess most of us have to live with the fact that there are a lot of people out there who do things a hundred times better than oneself ever could...in sports, art, music...)
