I am figuratively DYING for something new from Spectrasonics, but IMO anyone who says any of their products (Omni, Tril, & Stylus) sound "outdated" is NUTS!!! Every single day all 3 of those products can be heard in the most current TV and Hollywood productions.

One man's outdated is another man's fresh. Most in the EDM (old meaning, not new) scene view the appearance of sounds in hollywood to be the mark of passe. That said, again, I don't think that's what people mean by outdated, it's certainly not what I mean. Outdated refers to technology, not the end sound. Moreover, the reason that you hear Omnisphere in hollywood has to do with its popularity in hollywood. It is logical fallacy to assume that X is good/fresh/some other adjective just because it is popular. Before Omnisphere existed, something else was responsible for sounds in hollywood, Korg romplers?, the point being, that not staying current opens the door for change.

I certainly wouldn't call Omni "fresh" sounding anymore in 2015, but as someone who has written a lot for television in the past, TV and Hollywood producers usually do not like "dated" sounding tracks. That said, I do believe it is a testament to Omnisphere, Trillian, and Stylus that they are still being utilized quite a bit in an industry which is always striving to sound "fresh". I still want an Omnisphere 2 and a Stylus 2.....so please God-speed, Eric!!!! :tu:

It depends specifically what you're talking about of course. For certain kinds of sounds, Omni still excels, and devs like The Unfinished (especially) keep it fresh for those who don't want to program every patch from scratch - for those sorts of patches it's not aged a day. For EDM especially it's way behind the curve though. My guess is that this will be a focus of attention on the next update / version, with some new synthesis tricks.

Stylus' core library is very much showing its age in pretty much any genre. It's still a joy to work with and you can manipulate it well, but it's desperately overdue for an overhaul. Despite it all, I still use it way more than Battery 4 and Breaktweaker (the latter especially is a big disappointment - they made so many basic mistakes Spectrasonics would never make)

And don't forget PluginGuru (John Lehmkuhl) !
As far as meatty EDM is concerned, his partnership with Seth Norman is brill (Well actually Norman did the Toxic Omni soundset)

So what is your verdict?
Does it sound Outdated/Fresh or not :hihi:

Saying that a old synth with same features (Vst or not), is outdated is wrong ;)
New synths is like a new dressing with new presets to match that era only, so it depends on the user how fresh you want the old one to sound by tweaking it yourself and add equalizer or distortion if needed :)

Omnisphere has everything needed to sound modern or old depending on what the user are after..

What I seem to be sensing is a fight between "it works fine here" and "I'd really like something to get excited about"

Not sure if.....

I guess as an owner of all their products I'd like to see something new. IN FACT, we have seen no actually signs from this company in a long time. I have no idea......did they hit the pinnacle? That's all folks? Are they falling apart? Did ancient aliens have something to do with it?

?

OR, is everything fine and they are taking their time with something special. Big question mark.

How much new are you looking for spectrasonics. They arleady have almost everything covered, drums, basses, pads-leads. Maybe an update or two is likely than a entirely new vsti.

For me it is a combination of both. Omnisphere is my most used synth all around and I doubt that will change for quite some time even if it was never updated again. However, it would be nice if Spectrasonics had some new stuff in the pipeline so I could be sure their products will continue to evolve.

Ill get back to you in a decade when I master everything included in Omnisphere and recquire more sustanence :D

haha! Well, I'm not "unhappy" with it but I have this nagging feeling that it should be updated by now :headscratch:

Calm down guys. No big developer is going to launch a followup flagship until after Windows 10 is released next Fall.
