I'll be honest with you: I don't care. What matters to me is that a plugin is usable.

exactly. Duende plugins are fantastic especially the channel strip.

as far as eq curves, sure, waves used q clone to get the curves from a particular 4000 console. woop de doo, they null to 35db (ddmf neve eq nulls to -60db to the steinberg one and i can still hear a small difference).

is null to 35 db even considered good? and what's the biggie about that when they have the curves right.. so do propellerhead! it's not that hard to do LOL! They null to -35db though obviously because of the curves. the rest of the non nulling is *obviously* all the analog magic they didn't bother to even try to model.

overpriced plugins with nice gui's, i am sticking to that.
I´m sure the compressors also nulled to -35dB, otherwise this number doesn´t make sense.
btw, Q-clone uses convolution, nothing to do with the SSL4000 which is algorithms only.

Andy Gone wrote:I'm with chokehold here. If you like Duende (or whatever else) version, use it. If I like Waves SSL (and I actually do), please let me use it and decide if it is overpriced for me or not. I really don't care if it mimics real hardware to null to -X of -Z dB, because I like the workflow and the result.
Sorry but i have no idea what you are trying to imply. Everyone is entitled to buy and use and like whatever they choose. I never said otherwise. I am just presenting my opinion just as you are presenting yours, at a plugin discussion forum. I am sticking to my opinion just as you are welcome to stick to yours. I think they are terrible plugin "emulations".
Sorry if I misunderstood something. To my opinion, when we talk about plugins, it's a question of liking or not liking it. I mean, a plugin can't be 'poor' just because you don't like it.

It might not emulate the real hardware well, which (if it is a fact) makes it a bad emulation, but does not make the plugin itself bad, which is proven with hell of people who love it.

On the other hand, I don't believe SSL would allow Waves to put their badge on the product which is "terrible" plugin emulation. Just my opinion.

TheoM wrote:I know how q clone works but they could have used it to learn the curves is what i am saying.

I'd be curious to read more info about the -35db null.. anyone have a source link?
I´m sure they have proper test equipment, Q-clone is rather limited.

Yes more info would be nice. All I have found is random forum posts and this from Emusician Magazine:

"With 4000-series hardware reference components directly from SSL, Waves engineers spent more than a year analyzing, modeling and measuring every behavior and distinctive sonic characteristic, including harmonic distortion and time constants in an effort to achieve exact emulation. According to Waves, in many cases the plug-ins produced an impressive -35dB of phase cancellation when put side by side with the SSL hardware. The numbers can often look great on paper; how it sounds is what's important."

why do you even engage this guy in conversation?

you know what you are going to get - he's going to state his opinion in a very unfriendly, matter of fact manner. he's going to pull stuff out of his rear end like "they used q-clone to make the SSL bundle"

every forum is full of them, they have the earliest join dates and the most posts
