I think it would be a shit idea. As a S1 owner, eager to see what the next version update will bring, I hope you're way off the mark.
Given your position here http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 8#p6103828 I can't see any advantage in advocating for dongles and intrusive protection unless you're on the wind up.

I'm not fond of dongles - but thinking of vendor point of view - some tie to hardware is a favourable. So either sell i highly integrated controller with daw software(a special version) but also give old userbase ability to either dongle or maybe not top version(somewhat reduced in features).

Softube Console 1 use iLok, but soft version - so usb dongle not needed.

I see Presonus as hardware company - and software complement and give extra value to their hardware. To abandon that is opposite direction most go. Arturia and Native Instruments and to some degree Steinberg go towards hardware products.

I don't think sales of S1 were anything close to what Presonus expected. The almost firesales sales they had indicate that. And the Faderport came about long before StudioOne did - I was a bit surprised that not one word in manual to Faderport about S1 - but then it became clear why. They are a hardware company.

Maybe a full daw solution is the way to go. Have the entry level version as now - but top models only with hardware(but really well thought out solution). As the world of the internet work it seems difficult to change attitude towards actually buying software.

I know I look for a real good complete solution - that is affordable.

Softtube Console 1 is really close to this - but overpriced being a plugin and a simple controller. Half current MSRP $1100 and it would floor most solutions.

My view is at least 64 direct buttons to position on daws track - and then a bit like Faderport, having a motorized fader to do you thing on that track. As track is there, using markers you quickly find your spot where you want to alter automation or whatever, edit the clip a bit, open a plugin slot gui etc.

Currently running new Sonar I hope for Gibson to do something like that.

I know Roland tried with VS-series controllers, but they were not enough integrated and did not target the direct position on a track - I believe that is the crucial part to really improve workflow.

I think the Softube idea is breaking new ground here. Major workflow improvement with really affordable hardware(when they price it accordingly).
And they also started a dialog for daws to send some information on tracks so it can sync itself to the project.

If sitting all days working in a daw - what you do most of the time is probably navigating the tracks to find the one you want. Then with previous/next marker you navigate timeline - and are where you want in a sec.

Too much focus on other things with controllers so far. Plenty faders - but not motorized and no feedback from daws most of them. And really expensive technology and also space consuming.

To me Softube idea is a shining star. Guessing this is soon copied all over - but don't stop at 20 buttons+paging , but make it 64 buttons or so.

I really hope is not the case.

I don't think they'd do such a stupid move. Ever.

Yeap, too many in the box users, doing this would alienate them. Not a fan of dongles either especially when im producing on the go. Monthly subscription with free updates would be a better alternative imo.

If I wasn't edging towards wind up I am now. I'm not aware of any fire sales on the producer or professional editions, but even if they did blow it out, as a reaper user, you'll know that retail price isn't always an indicator of worth to a company.

And like I wrote above, I'm still hoping you're way off the mark. :tu:

Seems a fair amount of FUD entered this thread.

Odum's letter does not say anything about donglefied DAWs, Mixers being giant dongles, or anything else...it just talks about the fact that you can ALSO use Studio One with them.

But we know how these things go....speculation uber alles!!! :o

I probably am off the mark - just venting thoughts on the topic.

I bought S1 Producer for 50% off - I consider that firesale. And really rude towards those that bought at full price just before that.

Waves we know by now that's how it goes - they don't expect sales really on MSRP. So hardly anyone getting hurt either.

@lfm

What firesales? Where?

Oh, you were a part of the Sonar whaaaboohoo crew at one time. :hihi:

50% off is not a big deal anymore...try 75%-80% off. And not just Waves either.

Yeah, I feel terrible ashamed that I bought Artist for 5 bucks when they had the sales. Terrible! Presonus is a very very rude company, obviously! They turned me into something I'm not! ;)

I said "almost firesales" didn't I? ;)
Was it 18 months ago or something.

Also seeing companies like XLN Audio shipping a product at if it was $30, it's not a sign of strength as I see it. Now also shipping AD2 with Sonar...hmmm...that was close to the end for Vsampler 10 years ago.

After looking for direction in the desert for some years, I seem to be home in the bakery again.
Made a stop at Mixcraft 7 - but since showstoppers were fixed in new Sonar I went for it. After all, I have the longest history and many unfinished projects in Sonar format.

If they deliver for the yearly memberships, I probably stay. Real joy to work in, and since X3 really stable too. Biggest culprit is really working down the todolist, now getting updates every month they might succeed. They listed 25-50 fixes each month I've been on it.

But if Presonus comes up with a killer total solution that might make up for what I don't like about S1. Thinking hardware controller fully integrated, that don't need a room by itself. I really had the most hopes for Presonus with early adopters of ARA and VST3 at the time - but that was three years ago.

The control surface looks nice! That's been on the wish-list for a long time.

Still early days, and I'm not sure how i feel about the new gui from the screengrabs, but...wait and see :) It'd be awesome if they made it skinnable (or at least multiple color schemes), so folks can choose something that suits them. GUI is a rough thing...it's very difficult to get right in a universally appealing way.

It does indeed look nice, the CS... and some are already complainging about the price. :) We want it all, but cheap. :hihi: My impression of that is two-fold....

1. That device has to be road worthy / sturdy because it's main purpose is to control the rack consoles .... and ....

2. Not sure if you can get anything decently built with 16 moving faders and meters on every channel and Ethernet for cheap.

$2k seems just about dead on target to me for that controller. I think what some others maybe wanted was a less expensive 8 channel controller which (dunno) might have some associated new manufacturing and re-tooling costs to produce. This one appears to use the same chassis as one of their current mixers.
