Yes. I usually turn to software when I want to get something done.. I use hardware to actually have fun and get inspired.tehlord wrote: There's more to hardware than just getting the job done.
Edit: Let's revive the analog vs. digital debate once and for all

There are people (like me) who love hardware synths that may be operated as plugins, there are people who want Massive and Alchemy in hardware form. Different approaches, different workflow.tehlord wrote:That's like saying that playing Forza is better than driving a real car because it doesn't require insurance or fuel to make it run.mcnoone wrote:Yea, that's another thing.recursive one wrote:
Besides price, there are also the workflow factors, such as total recall, multiple instances etc.
The latency, and having to find the correct target setting to make up for it, make hardware synths a pain to deal with. I have a usb midi connection on my hardware synth, and the latency is so bad, that I have to spend a long time adjusting the parameters which still ends up much worse than any software synth. I imagine midi connectors are even worse for that.

I've been in love with analogue synths since as long as I can remember, I enjoy coming into my studio and seeing all the keyboards set up…it gives me the same sort of pleasure I can imagine some people get from owning a classic car.
Do I care for analogue vs digital? No. They all have their plus points and their negatives, for example I get a joy from using the older synths that software can't replace, however software stays in tune and has all the recall / automation I need. Generally when working on music (especially for media) it needs to be done yesterday, recall is VERY handy when working quickly!
I completely agree though that software would be better suited to creating new ideas rather than emulating what has gone before, but the best thing is to keep making music!
Now the real debate is Pro Tools vs Logic vs Cubase...

Now that we're at it, does anyone know what synths were used on the Forza 3/4 soundtracks? Sounds nicely analog to me, but what would I know. I can tweak even Tyrell to sound analog-enough to my ears, so I must be analog-deaf or something.tehlord wrote:That's like saying that playing Forza is better than driving a real car because it doesn't require insurance or fuel to make it run.

Yes. Until now. But that is going to changeUrs wrote: When I look at our sales figures it's quite obvious that "emulation capabilities" is the strongest selling point there is in this industry.

What fuels so much of this for me is the software emulations. They mostly look and operate like the machines they clone, and also claim to sound authentic. I find myself wondering how close, or which one is best. The more pertinent question I should be asking is "what does this fulfil for me".
Something like NI massive doesn't really create this debate for me, I see it as something that was designed from the beginning as a software tool and it's an easy case of "like it for what it is".
My 2p.

R.I.P analog vs digital debate
See guys, that wasn't hard at all.
Now, which VSTi sounds most "FM", you think?

It's all the f**king retards who want to buy analog emulation VSTis that replicate the bad interfaces designed 30 years down to all usability issues, but in flat 2D form to be used with mouse, and which sounds almost like the original
almost
In the end who wins? Lazy developers. Who loses? Everyone who'd like the synth industry to make some god damn progress for once.

By the looks pf the "sexier" meme. I'd say both men and women like hardware more, because of the action of turning the knobs, and pushing the levers.
It clearly has the erotic edge to it, for the advantage.
