GAS can be a form of procrastination if your true goal is just to finish tracks, and that's obviously a problem which requires some self-discipline to keep under control.
HOWEVER for a lot of us there is true joy in discovering and experimenting with synths and other music technology. The tools are fun and fascinating on their own. Then there's the community... we like sharing our discoveries, learning from others, and supporting developers who make the stuff we love.
So, from my perspective, if collecting and trying out plugins and hosts is an entertaining exercise in itself, and it's not costing you so much that you can't feed and clothe your dependents, who cares if you're not completing any tracks? You're doing something you love. Enjoy it. There are much worse ways to spend your money and your time.

nah disabler. i feel so alone some days. you make this stuff too. i don't understand, how this idea can be good to you, that you want to get involved with making sound but you don't want to get involved with making sound. the idea, someone else does all the fiddly stuff and we crest on top, is too convenient. meanwhile you are hypnotised into just being fine with giving your money (life) so other people can be good at things i guess there is too much diversity, too much to suck upon in life to actually engage in life *dazzle*.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

To compare: Nobody who is collecting vintage cars, is forced to race them.
So why should users collecting plugs, be forced to make tracks with them?

Well, in this respect I have had great success:-) For most of the plugins and soundbanks that I have purchased have brought me quite an equal return in enjoyment. Just to tinker and play with the software and to try different things that are probably not new to others, but they are to me. I have so much fun playing with this wonderful technology - it is like the joy of a child with a new toy each time I "play" with a new item in my collection.UltimateOutsider wrote:GAS can be a form of procrastination if your true goal is just to finish tracks, and that's obviously a problem which requires some self-discipline to keep under control.

I like to call my collecting VSTSynths and PlugIns an updated version of collecting stamps.
Mentioning either on your first date with a woman works like a charm.

Some best vst plugins have been totally removed from the internet globally. So your search can be wasteful and there is no guarantee that the ones which available now are worth your money, cheers
samplitude is the best daw for me. To have studio like sound before asking questions on any audio forums in the internet please read the book by alex unlocking fx creative potential

The way I control it is buy the best plugins for each effect or instrument you want in your songs.
If any new ones beat those by a large amount buy them if they are same or not as good don't buy them. Also think about what else you could do with the money.
I don't see it as a problem buying plugins some people I know get the monthly wage pay the bills then blow the rest on booze or drugs.

It's very addictive and you have to say STOP before spending more. Usually 1-2 for each eq, compressors, reverb, delays and limiters will be enough for a lifetime. But plugin developers know how to make you buy, they always make something "new" to get your attention. But after all if it makes you happy and you still have money for a living, why not! You only live once!

i was a guy who made his living playing music for a long time, gave it up as I hate touring. but I had very little equipment: a couple of guitars, an amp, a mono synth, a few pedals and that was it. i was never short on inspiration. it was all i did, and if the day was twice as long, I would have filled that extra time with playing and writing songs.
Now on the computer, completely different story. Got a copy of Logic, learned how to use it and bought way too many plugins. half the time, I use the plugs in Logic for bread and butter stuff. The songs weren't coming any faster as a result of the plugins. At first I found them really inspirational: "wow, that's a weird sound. ooh, got a song idea." but then that petered out. Now i don't think it was the plugins that were inspiring, I think I was just in the middle of a fertile period.
I stopped buying plugins, am still running Logic 9 in 32 bit, and i'm in the middle of a dry spell. The plugins aren't inspiring me right now. I'm just not able to focus like I used to. A lot of my creative energy is sapped by taking care of my kids, the wife, work and a house that needs tending. Instead of making music, I'm listening to it. I'm not tripping out though: it will come back.

My strategy was to sign up for classes at Berklee. I take a couple each semester and am so busy writing music that I don't have a lot of time to keep up with the latest gadgets. I'm also actually creating a lot of music and only buying more gear for the next class.

Well, my problem is a little bit different. I think I just ... like collecting synths
I like to have new plugins, move the knobs, sliders. I don't need to create actual music.
Soundbanks: Sylenth, V-Station, Z3TA+, Toxic Biohazard - good EDM Soundbanks

I didn't even read the thread but quoted for truth, page 1 2 3 4
I see everyone falling in the trap of expanding options without taking into acount the actual potentiality of you doing really one of the option, and not just into music...
The only one more plugin times ive had was because I was on some very strong but not that dark cafeine
take a free plugin pack and you can be ok for at least 1 or 2 years when beginning I bet... Idk I began just since some month but seeing what exist in free plugs...
For example I do music making and even mixing with 1€ bric a brac sound system atm since i broken my old speakers... Better than nothing...
All this stuff "spending 1094023934€" BEFORE doing music is very bs imo especially if you aren't event sur that's one of your goal
