In most instances yer general public (i.e. the listener, not yer anally retentive audiophile nerds that populate this manner of winternet board) won't give a flying f**k. Does it sound ok, can you dance to it/bang your head/sing along to it? are the important things, not oooh, x-3/y aliasing virus oversampling.

Hardware vs software?

No it wasnt polite, or polemic, it was just arrogant self-important crap.
Why start a thread in a discussion board if everyone thinks the same anyway.
Why respond to a thread in a discussion board if all you're doing is saying that you know better than anyone else how things should be done, and anybody who does it differently 'just do not think much'. Huh?
Oh yeah; because you want everyone to think you're really clever and think your opinion is more worthwhile than anyone else's and now you're playing it as though we're the ones trying to ram our opinions down your throat and insulting you for not being grateful.
Poor diddums. Its such a pity it was the other way around, isnt it.
Hypocrite.
If I was the owner of this board I would know who to bug off.
But you're not the owner. You're just another arrogant twat whose opinion doesnt matter one iota. Learn and grow.

Which is the kind of supercilious crap we get sued to from a particular kind of arsehole round here. But no matter how much you try your greasy weasel shit to pretend you're being picked on here, you're the tosser who came in with a bullshit attitude and are nowYou people just do not think much

One of the very, very, very few really useful articles published in Computer Music Magazine was the time they got virtuosi hardware synth players to comment on their chosen signature instruments’ soft versions. This was when the first wave of clones came out – Moog E, Pro-5 and B4.
For the Pro-5 they got Richard Barbieri (Japan, Porcupine Tree) a universally acknowledged Prophet-5 virtuoso, to play a Pro-5 using a Kenton Controller and keyboard. He spent hours making insignificant adjustments on the controllers whilst generating a series of mundane beeps. He finally declared that the main significant difference was that the real thing had almost imperceptible micro-steppings on its control knobs that were essential to some signature sounds. The reviewer then wrote words to the effect that Barbieri then produced a series of sounds and performances from the Pro-5 that had he not heard them himself, he would not have believed it possible.
It's the singer, not the song.

Admittedly it is an old arguement (and one which is likely to continue for a long time yet), but i still think that hw has one up on sw. And i dont mean this in terms of the box it comes in! I mean with regards to what you can do with it. For example, I have a whole bunch of vst's, and together they probably equal one 'good' hardware synth. I have vst's that are great for bass, some that do nice leads, other that are good for pads... Then i have a Q rack which does all of the above, to a higher standard. I mean quite litterally, I would happily trade all my software va's for a couple of second hand hw units. This is my point. When you pay lots of money for a hardware synth, manufacturers realise that you expect something in return. When you by a Virus, or a JP you pay alot of cash but you also get a whole lotta instrument. When you by a softy, its cost is far less significant and therefore so are your expectations of it. If i bought a vsti's for 50quid and it made incredible bass sounds but little else, Id be happy. If I spent 1000 on a hw va and got the same results, Id be reet pist off! I guess what im saying is that you get what you pay for. I know some people may contest this point, but i honestly believe it. The cost of an instrument has to be comparitive to its value. And i think the value of instruments such as those mentioned above goes far beyond a name and a few LED's. I really dont think this idea that you can replace a 1000 hw instrument with a 50 quid vst holds much water. Now if hw manufacters want to sell me their synths in the form of sofware for a reduced price, then I'll be all for working totally ITB.
I think the strength of sw at the moment is all the crazy free / cheap sound mangling apps you can find. All the things that simply couldnt be done with hw gear, this is where sw excels in my book. Things like CDP, Absynth, Reaktor, Hyperprism and all the amazing little freebies are what I love about my computer system.

this argument is already outdated thanks to the latest round of software ubersynths ...tee boy wrote:Admittedly it is an old arguement (and one which is likely to continue for a long time yet), but i still think that hw has one up on sw. ... i have z3ta+ / rhino / sytrus (and theres also albino / tera2 / a whole raft of additive-resynthesis instruments) all of which are EXCELLENT all-round synths for a huge range of sounds and applications
bottom line still remains - you pays your money and takes your choice - i know what works for me and you know what works for you

I've never seen a piece of hardware that can do what CSound and Max/MSP can do.
