People will still be using 32 bit machines in a decade from now and I will still be enjoying the benefits of 64 bit.thejonsolo wrote:64 bit. Welcome to 2006. I have no idea, no matter how stubborn we are, how this is still a conversation.
Native Instruments is pushing 64bit even on older products...

That's the thing, if you are using all vsti's and very little samples, there are NO benefits. That's why it's still, and will continue to be for some time, an ongoing issue/debate.

Not sure if it's even worth the debate. VPS Avenger, for instance, will be 64-bit only. Looks like the few people still using 32-bit only are not even worth the effort at all anymore.
And, BTW, the benefits have already been pointed out quite a few times now, see for yourself on Wikipedia about the advantages of using 64-bit software. It is not just the use of big sample libraries, the applications themselves also work faster, if coded respectively. If there wouldn't be an advantage with 64-bit software, then noone would have pushed the new standard. Of course, using more RAM is the most obvious advantages, but, yes, there are also others.

There is, a full 64-bit system uses less CPU.Touch The Universe wrote:That's the thing, if you are using all vsti's and very little samples, there are NO benefits. That's why it's still, and will continue to be for some time, an ongoing issue/debate.
The reality is that there are NO benefits from using x32 in 2016.

To me, the lack of a VERY CLEAR, IN YOUR FACE warning is the problem.
Just one question, then: You have several projects using 32-bit Kontakt on OSX. And you install v5.6.0. None of them now load. How much faffing around do you need to do to recover?

With FM8, there's still a bug in 64bit - the arpeggiator don't use the first note.
I'm really curious if they will do anything ever with the current synths....

64-bit plugins sound SO clean and crisp compared to the muddy 32-bit crap!

Ha ha ha ha, nice one!Neon Breath wrote:64-bit plugins sound SO clean and crisp compared to the muddy 32-bit crap!
But seriously, considering that most 32 bit VST will not run on my system (and especially after Cubase Pro 9) there is NOOOOOO advantage to 32 bit VST no matter the memory usage or not.
No run=no advantage. Easy math.

Using 32 bit DAW on 64 OS here and I would see the benefits of 64 bit DAW in the sense that I could run more plug in instances. On a heavy-ish tune of 40-50 tracks it becomes problematic for me on 32 bit.
64 bit would allow transparent use of above 3GB RAM or soft synths where things start getting unreliable. There are a few softsynth taking around 200MB RAM when the GUI is full size, so if you want to run plenty of live DSP without too much hassles bouncing it, it can surely get problematic. I suppose it depends on what you are doing.
I enjoy the CPU luxury of running a soft synth which may only play for 10-20 seconds through a 7-8min track, I can easily have 10-15 of these types of track loaded up in a project and I know I am by far not using as many tracks as some who produce in the same genre as I. 80-100 could be the norm albeit with small sections of audio dispersed along a track. This photo shows only 50pct cpu but I am always close to memory limits.
For now I put up with it, annoying though it can be. You know something is screwy when you cannot even write automation reliably anymore, lol. (Sorry for terrible picture but it shows what need to be seen) I'll switch when the moment is personally right. I look forwards to it
People made great music using little, so we should reflect on how good we have it and we have it really good ITB these days.

so that the developers don't have to waste effort supporting two code paths, one of which only used by a small but whiny number of people. and plenty of other reasons already outlined in this thread.Neon Breath wrote:Oh, ok. Why?tristan- wrote:everybody needs to move to 64bit.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.
