Anyone jumped ship / switched DAW this year?

Logic to Mainstage. But is Mainstage a DAW? Also, is Mainstage not just Logic without track recording or an Environment? Regardless, they both suck in the MIDI routing department. Suck substantially. OK, back to your regular programming.

hehehe. Well It was a little bit harder to get into back in the days. I'm used to it though. There's definitely a lot under the hood. Even back around version 5, the manual was huge!

My dad snagged a used Mac Pro with Logic X Pro installed on it, so we've been trying to learn how to use it.We both find it illogical. He also has DP7 that he's installed, which I find to be confusing. Still more natural than Logic, though.

The dongle is way too expensive to move to logic. I did that once (back when wogic pwoh was a grand) and the dongle (which required A DONGLE as well back then) was just woefully underpowered...thus more wasted cash.

Well, in this case, the dongle was $450 IIRC, and came with Logic, all of CS6, and Final Cut Pro X. 8 core, 18G of RAM, SSD, etc. I may just have to start browsing Craigslist myself at some point for Macs.incubus wrote:The dongle is way too expensive to move to logic. Hehe nice one. Unfortunately I do need the apple dongle for my line of work. Not a matter of money. If you are a hobbyist then I understand your arguments. Got a win desktop though which I very much like.

well, I expected members here will have great interested in switching to Sonar consider their life time update scheme. But this is not the case ... May be there are many other great DAWs to choose from. And based on this small amount of reply, few members switched to Reason 9, there is an alert to Reason team.
Again, I think I will switch to Bitwig by buying a 2nd hand copy if the price is right. And I love some of the features/UI that Studio one doesn't offer. Switching to Bigwig / Live is something like mind-set switching as well (now Studio One user). Hope I can make up my "mind" in 2017.

What line of work still "requires" a mac, just out of curiosity?paradiddle wrote:Hehe nice one. Unfortunately I do need the apple dongle for my line of work. Not a matter of money. If you are a hobbyist then I understand your arguments. Got a win desktop though which I very much like.

some design places could be Mac as well - quite common, and if I was working in such a place I would just use a Mac and fit in..jon wrote:Well, yea, that and workings at an Apple store are the only ones I can think of.

Many agencies switched to Windows when CS4 (or was it CS5, long ago anyway) sucked on OSX, or some of their designers switched because there's only so much beachball spinning one can take during a work day. Then people realized it doesn't really matter what OS they use, and EX-FAT solved the last compatibility issues with removable drives.

absolutely true - but in my country the propaganda is strong and has been strong through the higher education system - so there are still many many people who think you can only do proper design on Macs. To give an example I saw a tech at the Uni where I lectured tell a scientist that you could only do video on macs , microsoft did not support video, so that he had to buy a mega expensive mac and software. What he wanted was to output some animations out of Matlab - that's it!. Now Apple ran a system through the universities where techs and others who supported Apple got trips to the USA to attend dev conferences and the like. So if you were a good Apple promoting tech (or academic) at your Uni you might end up with a bit of an exciting holiday. Al totally legal and the last thing I want to do is imply that anyone would have acted unprofessionally so as to get one of these freebies. Nothing could be further from the truth. But I always thought the perception could be otherwise if you did not know the people concerned.jon wrote:Many agencies switched to Windows when CS4 (or was it CS5, long ago anyway) sucked on OSX, or some of their designers switched because there's only so much beachball spinning one can take during a work day. Yeah, Apple has strong coverage in arts and media education facilities here as well, which affects perceptions later in their careers, and in turn shaping the preferences of whole industries. Anyway, things have progressed, and the OS a person uses stopped mattering a long time ago, as long as work gets done, anything goes.

In all fairness, any DAW after Ableton Live is.zenophilix wrote:My dad snagged a used Mac Pro with Logic X Pro installed on it, so we've been trying to learn how to use it.We both find it illogical.
To answer to OP while I'm here:
No, still can't find anything better than Logic, been trying whole year and still on the hunt.
This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here?
