Personally, the Kate Bush influence ceased after Under The Pink, which is when she finished with that producer and moved on to producing more herself. The fact that her last two or so albums have been self-produced and show little resemblance to Kate Bush, as well as no Kate Bush songs being on her covers album, show that maybe it was the initial producers plan for these comparisons to be made. Since the Van Helden remix, her vocal production has changed considerably, going away from natural compression to a tight upfront pop production format, which again highlights a shift from the 2 x LA-2A Kate Bush comparisons.

there is one very sad fact borne out by this thread.

...that people need advice as to what music to like.

pathetic indeed.

@ Jaeson_Merrill

You are aboslutely right.
Thats the same reason hitlists and charts are made.

So people with no "real" interest in music knows what to buy to stay hip.

Yay, my first doublepost :)

yup, right on.

Make that *2* points from this thread--

1. The one you made
2. That in a music opinion thread, somebody will inevitably need to make flip remarks to appear more clever and 'in the know' than those who they perceive to be "the masses".

Regarding Nick Cave-- brilliant artist. I was thrilled when he joined the Anti- roster, along with Daniel Lanois, Muggs, Tom Waits, and other greats.

One more thought... I was just listening to the "Ladies of the Canyon" album again, and was reminded that Kate Bush is so obviously stealing from Joni Mitchell  I guess I'll have to burn my KB CDs now... :P

Not as sad as completely and utterly missing the point. I like what I like and up till recently I hadn't liked Tori Amos but then I heard this one song I was blown away by which made me think maybe I haven't done her justice. So I thought the best and perhaps fairest way to learn more about her material would be to ask her fans, of whom their appear to be many, what they feel are her best songs so I can listen to them and make up my own mind from a more informed perspective. It's called trying to keep an open mind, it's not about getting advice re what to like.

Not really. The fairest way would be to buy her CD's and judge for yourself.
Why does it matter what fans think of her.
Obviously they are going to like which you dont as a starting point. So there inst really much we can do to convince you (not that we want to) is there?

Just go buy a CD.

I like the "Tales of a Librarian" compilation. It's a good sampler.

I was a besotted teenager when Kate Bush came out (giving me perhaps my only tatse of empathy with girls who get obsessed with male rock stars).

I haven't heard a whole lot of Tori Amos, (even though I bought a 5 song CD single of 'Winter' at a second-hand shop last week, my first TA purchase) but what I've heard sounds a bit more lush and ballady than KB.

Has she done anything as spooky as 'the Dreaming' (KB's best in my opinion) or that concept side of the 'Hounds of Love' record?

I don't mean that sounds like that, but that is kind of 'out there' and uncommercial like that???

And Lunch Money, I totally agreed with your post, back on page one. Very eloquent.

Sounds like an expensive way of finding out if you like someone's music. I buy CD's that I know I'm going to want to keep - I don't have money to throw away so recommendations from her fans gives me a place to start. I'm willing to trust the opinions of those who know her music well to give me enough of an overview to be going on with - if I found I liked a whole load then I would buy a CD.

thats why theres mp3 downloads and friends to borrow cds from (both illegal>? maybe one day)

test it out, borrow a friends, download an mp3, if you likee, get the cd.

i try and have an open mind, which is why i dont need the opinions of others to decide what music i should or shouldnt like because of some status quo or supposed "Style" copping".
