Being soundcloud famous doesn't mean s*** these days.

I think that Soundcloud never was such an important platform for self-marketing or to become famous. It's for most people only a file hosting platform. The important platforms are still Youtube and Facebook.

i worked my ass off just to be "kvr famous". that's enough for me, the chicks and kickbacks i get from that is fantastic.
although it can be awkward leaving the house and having to wear a false beard and glasses just to avoid being mobbed.

the fact that i have bad eyesight and haven't shaved for over 2 years means my disguise is redundant of course, i cant escape :o

woggle wrote:soundcloud generates no revenue anyway - not for the artists and not even for the company. I have lost interest in uploading there. It is flattering to be liked by people whose work I also like, but I have seen none of that translate to spotify followers or other sorts of paid streaming. No matter how tiny the payments (and in my case they are very tiny indeed) they are always going to be more than soundcloud :)

ooooh, here is the spotify link https://open.spotify.com/album/7HnhYDD2kOwLg3mSl16LgI Perhaps you might be my first follower :)
Sure, to a pretty reasonable first approximation there is no money to be made online by composers at all. I just grow increasingly annoyed by the whole IT paradigm of give it to us for free and we will make money from your labour and you will feel grateful.

Always happy to hear of alternatives that might make online worthwhile -as it stands all my revenue comes from commissions

IMHO bandcamp and possibly cdbaby are the only platforms worth using.

i cannot comprehend such people :-D That's like savant-level musical theory skills to me.

i think that the only time the method of music-making matters is when the end result might be classed as a derivative work or when someone is just throwing pre-existing loops together, as is, and calling it a song. i do think that musical craft requires some invention.

That's not to say i don't use loops. i just tend to use few, destroy and bury them, and rarely use them vanilla. Even the MIDI drummer clips in BFD2 that i use don't tend to get used 100% unmodified. These materials are great for creating music, but if someone just uses them as a construction kit, i would hope they're a TV scoring person who's on a very tight schedule, working on a low budget program, and needs to get 40 minutes of music created in a couple hours, rather than someone producing what they want to be considered as "art"...

He clicks all his stuff into the piano roll, and it's almost cringe-inducing to watch a video of him work (nothing against sequencing, but it's just weird to see someone that famous with such little actual knowledge of music).
I can't play instruments either. I tried taking lessons when i was young, but no teacher ever felt like teaching me the instrument alone; they always wanted me to learn notation. Notation just doesn't work for me. I get the concepts, but i can't process them in my head. Rote memorization doesn't work for me and neither do mnemonics. It's dyslexia/dyscalculia or whatever, [...] not likely to change.

Yet i make music. Is my music invalid?

I'm not saying i like Deadmou5. I'm asking what you think his music work habits mean to the people that like his output. Clearly you're not one of those people. Are there no musicians that you like who are not classically trained? Does it matter when you like their output?
Here we encounter the fallacy of the excluded middle, twice. That the teachers you encountered would not do that (teach the instrument outside of notation) does not mean it can't be done.
i'm not saying it can't be done. I'm saying no teacher i explored was willing to do it and i ran out of patience with seeking formalized training.
jancivil wrote:Then there is the middle between 'classical musician' and 'clueless, lazy git in teh EDM field who can't be arsed'.
Sure.
jancivil wrote:Where you position yourself here is really not for me to say, clearly. [...] I took classical guitar lessons, once at 14 when my mother thought it conferred some legitimacy on my incessant guitaring,
That's why my parents offered to pay for lessons. When i said i couldn't do the work, they proclaimed i wasn't interested enough and no one ever bothered to listen to me about the neurological issues (long standing chip on my shoulder for how i've been treated by family and schools over what was an unknown disability).
jancivil wrote:But again it isn't up to any of us to determine where you stand. It will probably still be a source of defensiveness for you going forward, unfortunately.
Yeah, because of the way everything went down in my life, i have 80% the appearance of a skilled person, or an intellectual, and 20% the appearance of a mentally deficient or lazy/ignorant person. Invisible disabilities tend to result in character assassination. After hearing the same shit enough times, you sort of believe it yourself, on an emotional level.
jancivil wrote:But people your age (and older) have learned instruments. Personally, I think it's invaluable and the refusal to is generally just suspect. You have an excuse and I don't blame you but the pro-active thing would be to see if this deficiency (I said it, yeah) can be addressed. Or not! With regards...
Well, it's not just the impairment against notation. Dyslexia's problems with "order of operations" is not just a thinking thing. It's physical too. Then there's the fine motor skills... The more i've practiced guitar, the more i've realized i don't WANT calloused fingers. So i lack motivation to become a guitarist. Keyboardist, on the other hand... maybe. It's what i'm most comfortable with, but i'm still not a performer (and i still deal with "stupid hands" due to dyslexia).

i enjoy the videos, they have introduced me to some bits id not seen, and dan knows his shit!
'that pedal show' is a great guitar channel. they can both play, have a good time on screen, and are in a situation where they can really crank their amps, and they have good audio (and video) quality. they're entertaining and informative, both.

I’m sorry Vortex... and others. I don’t want to personally attack anyone, I just have to ask. What did you THINK has been going on for the last decade? You know online reviews are bought and paid for to right?

It’s the internet. It’s ALL fake. It’s about generating $ man. In case this one comes as a surprise to you I’ll just go ahead and say it. The “news”, movies, tv.... it’s all about generating hype. Sensationalism is the accepted norm now. NONE of it is genuine.

The internet fake.... go figure.

Post

... I mean, Politics... you name it. What isn't fake? That's the whole damn complaint about today's world. I'm not mad at the creators of the hype... I'm mad at the people who buy into it. It's the consumers of Riot Baiting that perpetrate the whole machine. Quit buying in.

Post

People can't not "buy in"; it's the natural human state to be obedient, subservient to authority and completely dumb as f**k.

Well, here's the thing.. once you wake up to what's going on around you, and realise you are constantly being sold, data based, monetized, pigeon holed, and cloned... you can't let HATE take over. You can't go through life with hate in your heart. What a shitty way to spend your life ya know. it's fine to consume... just use critical thinking about what you are buying into and just ASSUME that Russians have already invaded it and stole it when you do. Know you are buying in. Free Your Mind.
