Hi

"headquest" - I went for the boxed update; but also was given a download link at the same time!

Sorry to repeat myself, but I guess it will have to be pointed out again and again:

Be aware that Live4 as of now can not load any VSTs (hence also no instruments) when it is running in Rewire slave mode. So in rewire slave mode you can use only audio clips, internal effects and instruments (Simpler, Impulse), and real MIDI (i.e. external, MIDI to hardware).

No restrictions though when Live is the Rewire master.

Excellent point. Thanks DR. It should be obvious thatI have rarely used Rewire. Actually tried it twice oncw in Sonar and once with Fruity - I need to learn a great deal more before I can find a use for it.

Just out of curiosity:
  • Why the boxed version?

About 100 mb of loops come in the larger downloadable version, plus some one-shots for Impulse.

The boxed one comes with a printed manual and several hundred mb more samples/loops than the download.

And a box. :-)

Thanks,

I'm on a dial-up connection (broadband coming soon to my house though!), so I decided just to wait for the box.

Also, I recently got a time limited demo of Adobe Audition 1.5 (powerful stuff) so I'm spending all my time with that so long as it lasts! - hence not in a rush for Live (but I am looking forward to it...)

Are you saying that Impulse NEEDS multi-outs or are you saying that it HAS multi-outs and that you like that?

Because if its the former, Impulse definitely has multi-outs. Just want to make sure you already know that or a bit of claification if you didn't. :D

I immediately deleted the "Starter Set" files (135 MB unzipped) off my harddisk after I listened to them... Happy I didn't go for the boxed upgrade!
The Impulse presets are a good starting point though...

Is anyone doing a "Live 4" book? I bought three and never really took the time to learn it. Still stuck in Acid 4 mode. Never bought a book because the most recent covered Live 2.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

There are also reasonably priced tutorial videos available:

The lessons that come with Live are pretty good as is the manual.

I bought the boxed version too. Installed my download however, unlocked it, and it runs smoothly. I love it.

Try some of the random and variation controls on Impulse... Dude! this thing rocks! On my Dual G5, I can pretty much load this thing up with a ton of stuff! If they optimize this for dual processors, Look Out! The midi learn on the instruments and effects is the way it should be! ...finally getting a chance to use all these knobs and sliders on my PCR-30... expand the controls, turn on the midi, select, move button... bingo! Instant gratification... that's the way it should be, except this saves everything when you reopen the file! ...Sweet! I never could figure out why that was so hard??

Hi all...is the midi facility in live 4.0 as crude as that in acid 4.0?

i generally do midi in fl studio, project 5, or cubase sx...audio in acid 4.0 or live 3.x ... then composite the various pieces in cubase sx and render (unto caesar) in cubase sx...

this workflow is cumbersome, but does the trick!

when a composition is done, i use live 3.x for performance...

i wouldn't want to buy live 4.0 and find it's midi capabilities as minor an addition to live as it is to acid...

anyone...set me straight on this! thanx

Both are very good, and I've got some very crunchy beats coming out of the Impulse machine.

I have a GEM S2 and Live has inspired me to fiddle with the onboard sounds. I used to be afraid of audio, but now I try and commit everything to audio asap!! :D

Live works guys. It just works. It doesn't feel like a word processor either!!
always though it was more like a spreadsheet

Hi

I bought the boxed upgrade as it was not much more than the download, but I get the cd's and manual - which means I have a REAL MANUAL that I can hold in my hands and pick up away from the computer whilst having a cup of tea!

Also means I don't have to archive the program and search through a load of plain cd's!

And I like boxes!
