Sound design is not composition
and therein lies the answer to the question :D

I like to use as many of my own sounds as I can, but being very pressed for time, I often end up using presets. No big deal, and as has been said above, if geniuses like Beethoven and Mozart didn't need to tweak the f+ck out of everything, why should I be bothered too much ??
:P
but often the designing of a sound, be it messing with the attack time of a sound or designing a whole patch from scratch (hey that rhymes) is what gives me the inspiration for the tune.

equally though, if there are a whole load of presets and one of then works for you, why f**k with it. if there were no presets we'd all have to work harder fortunately there are people out thee like biomechanoid and TC to inspire us.

depends on the sound. and the tune. and my mood.

do whatever makes you happy and encourages you to write good tunes.

cheers,

steve.

true. and tons of them are really good. better than I could ever create them.

but in my case it's a psycho prob. I don't want anything that's not mine - like a body refusing strange cells. I take into account that my sounds aren't topclass, probably they will be one day but I don't care at all.

at least I tweak the given patches or let them inspire/teach me (by studying the modulations for example).

i agree with r module

also i find a lot of presets are made to show off the synth and are often like a piece of music on their own and are far to complex for me to use

Something else that I do, a lot, is layer patches quite a bit, and then tweak a bit to make things fit. So I guess I am somewhat making my own sounds.

I wish I had the time/knowledge to create my own patches! Maybe someday 8)

Having said that, I usually use presets, but will try to make use of their built-in cc modulation settings as much as possible for animation.

will read the rest later maybe but no its is not essential but can be enjoyable.

In the case of arps etc., it can feel like cheating to use them as is, a bit like use commercials drumloops or samples. If it's a bass, lead or pad, then if it fits I use it, guilt free...but then I'm shallow like that :D

Sound design is as important as your bread, milk and daily dose of caffine.
