as I have all Genesis albums I would suggest you to get (If you like only Gabriel era) the albums from Foxtrot to last gabriel era album. They are all good. The albums released before Foxtrot sound too dated to todays listener. Even Foxtrot took me a lot of listening times before I started to like it. It's sound is so basic. For most of the songs is just guitar, bass, drums and Mellotron. And the production overall is dull and very underproduced. But it has couple of good songs (Supper's Ready for example).
Absolutely avoid From Genesis to Revelation (1969). It is completely shit and even a diehard Genesis fan would not like it.

Like somebody said, Wind and Wuthering is the last Peter Gabriel era album. Although P.G was not anymore in the band, It's the last album with That Genesis sound.

Like many others also said, Lamb is the best one they did with Peter Gabriel, and the remastered version sounds great!

Start with Lamb lies down on broadway, fell in love and then get the others ;)

what about Duke then? The 'behind the lines'/'Duchess'/'guide vocal'-trilogy for instance? :?

Hell, after considering it again I came to the conclusion that if I had to pick out one Genesis-album which sums up best for me what is so great about this band I'd chose either 'selling England' or 'Duke' - it would be hard to decide between the two :?

'Lamb' would even come third... (too many mediocre tunes between the milestones)

Think "Tresspass" is my favourite.

Love the watership-down kinda feel it has.

Well it has for me anyway!

I've only ever heard Foxtrot and Tresspass rfom when Peter Gabriel was with them tho....except for a tape my folks' had. Was awful. Sounded like it was live to me, and Peter Gabriel wasn't exactly the best singer in the world back then. Live anyway.

Yeah :) I agree.
But you have to draw the line somewhere ;)

I'd say that Wind and wuthering still has that 70's (analog) prog rock sound, but Duke is slightly more modern with Roland drummachines and such. And more Collins' compositions in the style which came later his trademark in the eighties.
But yes, The 'behind the lines'/'Duchess'/'guide vocal'-trilogy is great and very much like the "Gabriel era Genesis".

And Duke is my favourite Genesis album ever, btw ;)

o.k. - seems I misunderstood you - my bad

yes, I get your point - maybe ( or maybe probably :hihi:)that's what makes Duke so outstanding:

Best of both worlds to use an old phrase :D

As for me, my favorites are from the first one and "Trespass" ("The Knife" "Dusk" are great, and Ant Phillips was a pretty damn cool guitarist in his own right)...through to "And Then There Were Three" (actually the first Genesis album I ever bought...but not for "Follow You Follow Me", but for the first tune on the album that some radio stations here were playing a lot, "Down and Out"...which features a very cool wild Tony Banks synth solo and a heavier than usual overall feel that I liked).

After that....I thought Duke was OK, but I was starting to sense the beginning of the end for a sound that I had grown to love...

Hard for me to say what my actual fave albums were, but probably "Trespass", "Selling England By The Pound" (one of my wife's favorites as well :)), "The Lamb..." (big surprise, eh?), "Wind and Wuthering" (I love "Eleventh Earl of Mar") and "And Then There Were Three". But I also love "Trick of The Tail" and "Seconds Out" too....

BTW, for Hackett fans: there was a two-song EP that they released containing what I believe was one of the last things he recorded with them during the "Wind and Wuthering" sessions, a song called "Inside and Out". It features some very nice 12 string guitar work and closes out with an excellent Hackett guitar solo. The other song, "Match of The Day", kind of gives you a sneak-preview of some of the more pop-sounding tunes they had in their future. Anyway, definitely worth looking into if you can find it. :)

Well, everyone's said what I would've. The consensus opinion, if such a critter as a consensus existed (it would look like a wildebeest, probably) seems to be about the same as how I feel: Too much strings over the very earliest proto-Genesis stuff, once they found their voices, they really cruised, then started to kind of slack off, but some of the later stuff is still worthwhile and Genesis-y.

So: I don't have anything to add but am such as Genesis nut that my not posting anything at all would've thrown the world off its cosmic axis. Or something.

Bloofle.

I love Entangled on that one. It would be nice to find the synth sounds on that one (nice guitar too).

Not exactly the same thing but I'll bet with some tweaking a good sound designer could bring it closer.

I've noticed several Genesis references in SR material, and maybe a few other prog stuffs. :-D
