Same here: Tool and APC are probably some of my current newer-band faves as well (along with Porcupine Tree, which vurt got me turned onto...different kind of sound, though

With regards to TOOL... actually TOOL do happen to be a favourite band of mine, but I don't generally comment on who I like because it leaves out everyone else, and the suggestion might then be that doesn't Robert like them as well. So, I make no further comment on that other than TOOL are wonderful characters. Adam asked me do you hear the King Crimson influence in TOOL? and I said "no, not at all". TOOL are more comfortable being TOOL than King Crimson is comfortable being King Crimson. It's in the nature of the band (KC) I'm afraid.

I love KC, the greg Lake period was wonderfull, but John Wetton was a good singer too.
I have adored the 80's period, I don't know why but BEAT is one of my favorite album of all time (strange isn't it). I adore the actual period, The power to believe is a fantastic album.
Well, KC is still a fresh and inspiring band. That's the difference with Yes or Genesis.
(But I prefer Yes and Genesis for their progressive period).
And know, a Gentle G>iant thread ?

King Crimson has always been one of my favorites. My favorite incarnations are Fripp-Wetton-Bruford-Cross and Fripp-Belew-Bruford-Levin. Up through Islands Fripp used a lot of jazz and classical sylings and with the shifting line-up I think their output was a little erratic. Lark's Tongue-Starless-Red was a 1-2-3 punch culminating with Starless at the end of Red. Great stuff from a great band.

here's mine. I love the 70's stuff as I love the departure from it.

for all the wicked souls who got ProjeKct2 "SpaceGroove"...space is still the place.

also, very recomended is the League of Gentlemen's "thrang thang gozinbulx" live cd, hot stuff.

I've always enjoyed KC, altho the Thrak track and the mini album of 'thrakking' kind of lost their direction somewhat..

I've liked all periods, tho haven't heard the last couple of LPs..sorry there called CDs now aren't they...

Used to write to Bruford quite a bit, and had a drum lesson from him. Nice chap. He takes all the KC stuff with a pinch of salt these days, and his Yes connexion even more so!

As for a Gentle Giant thread mentioned, they come around every so often, there was one last November/December time (as I recall, could be well off). I had all their albums, great band (I would say knocked the sox off KC, but it's abit of an apples-oranges comparson... let the flames begin!!!)

UK Crimson fan here. Astounded to see so much talk about a band I thought had been forgotten by everyone but me and those Japanese fellows.

I shouldn't be surprised though as the Crims have always been into cutting edge technology and I also should have guessed that the fans would be too (case in point).

I have it on good authority (I read it in an interview) that Pat Mastello is a big REASON fan and has used it to great effect on some of the more recent KC material. As for use of VST's, I would bet good money on it their use too.

KC is my all-time favorite. nobody better than Fripp. Saw them live, 1973, at the Berkley Community Center.(before most of you were born!) The opening act was a little 4-piece who had just put out there first album. the 4-piece was the Eagles! interesting opening act for KC... it was Fripp, Wetton, Bruford and Cross. can still picture them on stage doing Easy Money...

Lizard is still my favorite.
Court of the crimson King is a must from time to time.

The newer stuff got me more into Trey Gunn's music and Gordian Knot with Sean Malone from Cynic.

The Power to believe I listen to when I really need to be hit bad.
I never made it through the new DVD.
I miss the fun and admiration in the newer stuff.
But I can admire the technical perfection.

Couldn't agree more with three bands listed. But when I think about KC and the Beatles, I wonder what they have in common that I like so much. (XTC is already fairly Beatle-ish so that I see.) KC, though at times beautifully melodic, has a lot of intense(sometimes discordant) sounds, very different from the Beatles(Revolution Number Nine not withstanding.) So why would they both appeal to me so much? Any thoughts?

Favorite KC CD: Probably Red(or the 2 preceding albums) Not nuts about their last 2 for some reason. But I'm not giving up yet.

Speaking of Pat and software: a really cool, interesting CD KC fans might want to check out is his BPM&M project with Bill Munyon....basically, it's a wild sample-mangling/almost industrial-sounding project featuring all King Crimson and Fripp audio samples and sound-bytes, and released on Tony Levin's Papabear label. Definitely a lot of fun!!

I have to agree with Squids on my favorit Crimson albums.

The thing for me about King Crimson is it's one of those groups you have to be in the mood to listen to or it will sound disjointed but when you are ready it can take you places like nothing else can,well worthy of the wait between listens.

Sonicat, I think part of Fripp's magical guitar playing is less about his technique, it's the notes he does'nt play.

No one plays like Fripp because he is true to himself besides the ability to take chances and experiment and to "think outside the box".

Maybe you too can someday be as good if you are willing to play your own style and not try to copy anyone else.

Someday we may be listening to Sonicatronics.

For me it was the Beatles that first turned me onto exotic and unusual sounds when Rubber Soul and Revolver came out and i have to think that there would not have been Prog Rock without them.

Yes I agree he has alot of dynamics in his playing that are very tasteful, even when he does his Frippertronics work or his guitar synth solo releases which That Which Passes is my favorite.
I am lucky in a sense as a guitar player in that I have never been able to fully emulate any one particular guitar player and I think I have developed a unique style because of that. I just don't have the chops that I think would help bring my ideas out easier.
And great name for a style Sonicatronics, you may have just givin me the name for my first guitar album
