As for the blowout pricing, it's at least five years since it was released. If it were selling like hotcakes at full price I don't think it would've been marked down so drastically.

Lots of software makers sell older items at very low prices (or give them away) as a way of gaining users and building their email list so they can market other software. Often the blowout sales precede release of a New! Improved! version. It's a legitimate marketing tactic. They get useful information and potential future sales, buyers get software for next to nothing and maybe a good upgrade price.

For another example, for a month or so PIB was giving away Dope* beat-making plug-in with every order. Now UJam has released Dope 2, and upgrades are $9. Not my cup of tea but I know someone who will enjoy them as gifts. For $9 (or free if I don't bother with the upgrade) I'm not going to complain about an occasional marketing email, and unsubscribing is easy and quick if the emails do become odious.

By all means, look gift horses in the mouth. If you don't like the attached strings, the solution is simple: don't get them. But anyone who pre-emptively declares that all gift horses are the Trojan kind could well miss out on genuine bargains. *shrug*

Do you think companies want to charge less and lay off employees? The issue is piracy. Prices have been dropping for years have you noticed any lack of new developers? On the contrary the lower prices have only made music software more accesible to people who otherwise would of been too timid to invest in it.
Also other models such as subscriptions and Patreon are the way of the future.

recent price dumping in plugin world isn't good practice tho for ... , izotope and PA, and when there's a monopoly, its too late to do something about it
That is a very good point.
Maybe best to ask a developer. I didn’t mean to emphasize monopoly per re, just that the comment has merit. Bigger companies that build enough capital are always in a position to flush smaller companies out by underselling, (predatory pricing.)
If a company is older, or much larger (both) and have sold enough copies to pay the bills, it’s easier to toss something out there at super low prices. They can sustain their operating costs and still sell cheap. Great for the GAS but not great for the small, esp starting out, devs.

Edit: of course when items are selling for super cheap i guess once in a while it’s not taking up much $, so those with GAS and money can ride the new plug in train.

The previous is also true but the situation still effects small devs. Just that it’s not a predatory move. Selling old, already profitable items.

I’m ok i have iris v1. It’s not a simple synth. It is somewhat unique.

(This isn't directed at anyone in particular, just musing.)

Not sure I agree that small devs are outmatched by free/cheap bargain software. As I see it there's room in the market for super bargains from bigger outfits and less spectacular pricing from smaller companies.

At least here at KVR, smaller operations often have better reputations due to rooting-for-the-underdog appeal. I'm glad to get Iris 2 cheaply, but that doesn't stop me from supporting my favorite smaller dev shops with dollars.

I don't expect smaller companies to offer Cut-Me-Own-Throat* pricing. A moderate holiday discount is usually sufficient, and when my bank balance allows, I'll gladly buy at full price just 'cos I like the people who run the business and want them to succeed. (Of course the software has to be something I like too!)

I understand not everyone shares my opinions and attitudes on this. But I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.

Izotope will have clearances right before a paid update. Chances are Iris 3 will be released in the near future and the upgrade price from Iris 2 will be reasonable. At least that was how it happened with Ozone 8 to Ozone 9. Some call this dumping. I see it as a “loss leader”.

iris isn't that great imo. it lacks a lot of features you'd expect.

On the other hand, I think that the big editing suite they have is pretty great. REFX? I forget what it's called. It's the same spectral editing with way more possibilities.

I can see using Iris on occasion but I usually just forget that I have it. That said I bought it for cheap cause f**k it.

So i had a play with it again, and found that there is definitely potential for some interesting sounds.

I'm thinking sampling Kaivo into Iris2 would yield some interesting results.

I used Iris 2 on some recorded bird sounds. Interesting to hear the components of a complex vocalization isolated and reassembled in different ways.

It's interesting to hear what people complain about with a software product that is less than $10.

If it was free, it seems they might still complain.

Post

Before buying (last year) I read reviews, and the consensus seemed to be that it wasn't that great. So I set my expectations low, and was pleasantly surprised.

Worth full retail? Not a chance. Worth the $10 I paid? Yup.

Post

I edited my comment after a few mns of considering exactly that: super cheapies probably not wiping out small devs.

I also like to use Iris (v1) for field recordings (birds and frogs). Lotsa fun there.
I really like Iris, i wish it had gotten what i consider a “real” upgrade but IZ doesn’t much care about that (or spectron whch i also like).

In my case not complaining about the plug in, agreeing about the business model. (Which i am still not convinced is good or bad). I’m not knowledgeable about the plugin market to be sure, but kvr being kvr i had to voice my opinion
